Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders quickly became a viral meme thanks to his Green Mountain fashion sense at the Presidential Inauguration.
On January 20th, 2021, Joseph R. Biden was inaugurated as the next president of The United States, succeeding Donald J. Trump who failed to achieve the 2nd term in office making him the 10th U.S. President in history to not win re-election.
During the inauguration, Sanders wore the now famous knitted mittens.
The memes focus on the mittens that Bernie Sanders was wearing. While Kamala Harris, Jill Biden, and Michelle Obama had designer dresses on, Bernie Sanders had woven mittens made by a school teacher in his home state of Vermont. Bernie had his arms crossed and many felt that his mittens and overall ‘lets-get-this-over-with’ demeanor captured sentiment about how the past year has been.
The memes exploded across the internet. Marissa Garbiel, a 4th year at Champlain College, said of the viral story,“I think they can be really funny, but I also think that Gen Z uses those memes as a sort of coping mechanism/distraction from the real issues that are happening.”
Gabriel wasn’t the only one who saw the memes as a distraction. Another Champlain College student, Lyn Smith, said, “I think it’s funny but a little tired at this point. I get worried about anyone idolizing/memeifying politicians, but when asked about it Bernie said ‘$2000 for every adult American’, I feel like at least people are idolizing someone who seemingly wants to work for them.”
Senator Bernie Sanders has very close ties with the Champlain College Community. He serves as an advocate for students in the state of Vermont and has consistently fought to erase student debt and make college free. Additionally, Bernie Sanders is a huge icon and a politician that is loved and supported by many within the greater Burlington community.
The Burly Beaver reached out to Sanders’ Burlington senatorial offices about future fashion and charity tie-ins the Senator may plan, but as of press time had not heard back about any of the Senator’s haberdashery.
