Activity 1: Money Matters
In this introductory lesson, students will evaluate buying decisions by practicing problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to understand how resources are limited. Students will learn that spending money for one purpose means that money cannot be spent for another purpose (opportunity cost) and that spending priorities can be developed by differentiating between needs and wants. Activity 2: Spend Your Money Wisely My Friend
In this activity, students play a game to experience the challenges and rewards of balancing needs and wants. After viewing the video Spend Your Money Wisely My Friend, students work together to define needs and wants and provide examples. Students play a game in which they make decisions about how they want to spend a given amount of money, but they have to stay on their toes because—just as in real life—circumstances change! Finally, students summarize their earn, spend, save, and donate plans to see how far they’ve come in learning about money. (from ca-chingusa.org)
Activity 3: Comparison Shopping
This lesson introduces students to the concepts associated with comparison shopping and choosing the best option. The activities in this lesson will introduce students to the difference between needs versus wants. Students will also learn to scrutinize advertising to discover messages that may affect their decisions. (from practicalmoneyskills.com)
