Writing

  • Who would be a famous person you would want to meet? Write a letter to them.

  • What was the best movie you have ever seen? Write a review of the movie.

  • A calf mysteriously appears on your playground at recess. What do you and your friends decide to do?

  • What is your favorite chore at home or at school, and why?


Phonics

  • Match the prefix to its meaning:

  • Make 2-3 words with each prefix in the table

  • Write sentences using prefixes.


Reading

  • Read an informational text. Make a diagram with 4-5 facts about the topic.

  • What is something you want to know more about? Write down questions that you have about that topic. Research the topic to find the answers.

  • Grab a favorite book and a snack. Find a comfortable place outside and read!

Questions parents can ask their children as they read or hear a read aloud.

  • What is the author's purpose for writing this text?

  • What caused the character to change their mind about....?

  • Did the author write this story from his/her experiences or someone else's experiences?

Math

  • Solving for Area and Perimeter

    • Measure the length and width of your kitchen table. Find the area and perimeter.

    • Measure the length and width of your bed. Find the area and perimeter.

    • Measure to the nearest inch, the dimensions of two flat surfaces, ex.: an envelope and a magazine. Determine the difference in the areas and perimeters of the two objects.

  • Geometry and Measurement

  • Using a corner of a sheet paper as a right angle, measure the angles of objects where sides/edges come together(identify them as acute, obtuse or right angles).

  • Make a list of objects around your home as: prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders, and spheres and identify any parallel or intersecting lines(perpendicular or non-perpendicular).

  • Fill two exact size glasses, one approximately ½ full with water, the other with ⅛ full with water. Using a third glass of the same size, approximate where the ¾ full line would be. Predict if the two amounts of water together will be more, less, or equal to the ¾ full line. Explain why you made your prediction.


  • Numbers and Operations

  • Using a deck of cards(A-9); where A=1, draw two cards at a time to create two 2-digit numbers. Multiply the two 2-digit numbers together using 2 different strategies(standard algorithm, area model, distributive property).

  • Using a deck of cards, generate two 2-digit numbers. Round the two 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10. Before multiplying them together, predict if the approximate product will be greater or less than the actual product of the two numbers. Explain your reasoning.

Writing About Math

  • Read one of the math prompts to your child. Have your child orally respond to you or a family member.

  • Have your child write about one of the math prompts in a journal. After writing down their thoughts, ask them to share with someone in the family.
