In 1833, the Phenakistoscope was invented by Belgian Physicist, Joseph Plateau. It was one of the first animation devices widely used to create the illusion of fluid motion.
The Phenakistoscope used a spinning disc attached vertically to a handle. The user would spin the disc and look through the moving slits at the disc’s reflection in a mirror.
Grade 10s were challenged to create their own Phenakistoscopes, experimenting with traditional animation techniques in a sequence of illustrations expressing a variety of narratives. We hope you enjoy viewing the imaginative work in the Art 10-1 and Art 10-2 galleries!
