Welcome to the
Giant Steps STEAM Lab!
What is STEAM ?
"STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. "- Education Closet, 2016
STEAM learning helps students obtain a more holistic understanding of the world around them. It adds to the application of science, technology, engineering and math through the arts, exploration and creativity.
Students not only continue to examine the components of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) but are now able to delve into the world of "the arts" such as liberal arts, language arts, social studies, physical arts, fine arts, and music. This allows students to enhance their critical thinking skills. It also gives essentials tools and skills necessary to explore new and creative ways to create and problem-solve.
What is STEAM at Giant Steps?
The Giant Steps STEAM Lab is a FUN place to be! Each day is filled with sessions that allow our students to create and thrive. It is a space that was built to encourage positive social interactions and learning. Think of it as "mission- minded learning". The mission of the STEAM Lab is to allow our students to work at their pace while being exposed to new things and encouraged to create.
The STEAM Lab is a space for them to think, experiment, build, problem solve, explore, collaborate and so much more! Students also participate in technology themed activities such as coding and various forms of robotics. It is also the hub for our Student Council meetings and school newspaper, "The Gator Gazette".
The foundation of the Giant Steps STEAM Lab holds true to the values of inquiry, critical thinking, and process-based learning. Curiosity, inquiry and being able to creatively find solutions are our driving forces.
Each student that enters is challenged to "think outside of the box" while exploring. Lessons are planned and uniquely created to fit the needs and sensory requirements of our students. Whether they are learning about the scientific method, building mock version of their homes, exploring our 3D printer, creating codes or making music, our students are given the opportunity to blossom and shine!
