Join us in the collaborative effort to

identify species around CI campus!

What's a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is an event that centers around searching for and identifying different species of plants, animals, and fungi in given area during a set time period -- it’s a great way for people to engage with their environment while creating real data for science! CSUCI's BioBlitz 2022 is planned for Saturday, February 19th at 10 am, and will take place on the CI campus, hosted by Channel Islands Audubon, Green Generation Club, and Surfrider Club.

The Bioblitz is a fun, outdoor activity for students of any major and it will provide data for ESRM capstone students and other scientists who are looking to discover trends in biodiversity around our school. Using the iNaturalist phone app, participants make observations by taking and uploading photos of organisms, which are identified by either the app or by helpful experts, and become part of CI's biological inventory!

Russell Winans, coordinator of student organizations and involvement, will review all event plans, activity space, and supplies, and will ensure compliance with COVID safety protocols and policies from the offices of Environmental Health & Safety and University Events. CSUCI's BioBlitz can provide service learning volunteer hours for participants who are looking for a fun, simple activity to spend time outdoors, learn about our local biodiversity, and contribute to our scientific understanding of our surrounding ecosystems.

The application we will be using to collect data and identify species is iNaturalist.

iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. It's also a crowdsourced species identification system and an organism occurrence recording tool.

The app is completely free to download. All you will need to do is make an account before you can start using it.
