We are accepting student work for our paper! You can find more details in the Art Gallery.
Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us have felt the push of peer pressure at some point. It could be something small like joining in on a TikTok trend, or something more serious, like skipping class, trying something risky, or going along with a group decision even if it doesn’t feel right. But why does peer pressure have such a strong effect on our decisions? And how can we recognize it before it leads us in the wrong direction?
What is pure pressure? Peer pressure is when people around our age, friends, classmates, teammates, try to influence how we think, act, or decide. Sometimes it’s direct, like someone saying, “Come on, everyone’s doing it.” Other times it’s more subtle, like feeling left out if we don’t join in. It can be positive, but it’s often talked about in a negative light because it can push people to make choices they normally wouldn’t.
Why do we give in? Humans are wired to want acceptance. Especially in school, fitting in can feel like everything. We might go along with something just to avoid being judged, laughed at, or left out. Our brains are still developing, especially the parts that control decision-making and self-control, so we’re more vulnerable to social pressure than adults.
How to handle it? Know your values. If you’re clear about what matters to you, it’s easier to say no when something doesn’t feel right. Choose the right people. Surround yourself with people who respect your choices, even if they don’t always agree. Talk with someone. If you’re unsure, talk to a trusted adult or friend. Getting another perspective can help you see things more clearly.
You're not alone. It’s completely normal to feel pressure, just know that you’re not the only one trying to figure things out. Every student is navigating choices, friendships, and their own identity. What matters most is staying true to yourself. Your voice and your decisions matter; don't let other people change who you are.
