How using AI to do your Assignments can have a Negative Impact on your Academic Learning
AI is, for sure, the greatest learning tool ever invented. So why is it making learning so much harder for so many students? The problem isn't the technology, it's how you choose to use it.
Ok, let’s be real, it's 2025 and there are multiple different AI platforms that you can use to do your homework, or to write an essay for your English class. To be honest, I'm a student too, and I have also been tempted to use AI to do my homework. You know, even when I was writing this article, I was really tempted to go and use ChatGPT. For the longest time, I just kept staring at a blank page, not knowing what to write about, until my brother finally gave me the idea to relate this article to the "Bobcat Times" readers.
I wasn't just scared to use AI because I would get in trouble for copying, although sure, that's scary. But no, this is even worse. Ok, so let's say that you use AI to complete all of your math homework, and you have a test coming up that you didn't study for because you think that you get it. Alright, let's fast forward to the day before the exam. You're in your room and you're thinking that you're gonna be fine, and know everything, but that's until you open your study guide. You read over the first question, then the second and the third, but you can't figure out any of them. So, probably it was not a good idea to let AI do all your homework, because now you are trying to read all the stuff in one night. Not a fun night.
Letting AI do things for us is dulling our minds
It is not that I hate AI, in fact, I think it's a really useful tool. The issue is, it's being used for the wrong reasons. For instance, we all know Alexa and Siri, the two most popular virtual assistants. They make life easier in so many little things, like letting us know the weather the next day or setting an alarm for the morning.
Students' opinions
I wanted to see what some of the students at Brea Junior High thought about using AI to do their work, so I interviewed some of them. They all had different opinions, but they all said that AI could help and hurt us based on how we utilize it.
Bryson, an 8th grader, states that in his opinion, "using AI to do your homework is bad because you're not pushing yourself to your full potential."
Allison, 7th grade, says that she thinks that "it is a good tool that you can use to get some information," but that she also thinks that having it do your work for you is "wrong, because then you're not actually learning anything."
Conclusion
In the end, AI isn't the problem, it's what we choose to do with it. If we simply use it for everything, then we are basically harming ourselves and our learning process, too. You can also use it as a study guide or something you can reference when you are stuck, instead of simply using it to cheat.
