Transformer Games
RETRO / OLD TITLES
(Before the 2000’s, that are standalone stories)
The Transformers (1985):
This is the first Transformers game ever, only one year after the Transformers were created and was developed by Denton Designs. It was about you finding parts for the Energon cube. There are five Autobots you could play as: Optimus Prime, Hound, Jazz, Mirage, and Bumblebee. It is a score-based game in which you have to collect all the cube parts for a score.
Transformers: Battle to Save the Earth (1986):
This is a strategy game in which you look for flashing red locations and was developed by Activision. When you see one, you attack with your team of eight Autobots (Bumblebee, Hot Rod / Rodimus Prime, Hound, Cliffjumper, Pipes, Kup, and Blur). All the Autobots have energy; if it gets too low, they have to go back to base to replenish it.
The Transformers: Mystery of the Convoy (1986):
This game is a side-scrolling shooter, known for its one-shot kill, and was developed by the studio ISCO. The story is Ultra Magnis investigating Optimus Prime's death. You have to collect notes to find out who killed him. A fun fact is that they misspelled convoy, as “comvoy” on the game container.
The Transformers: The Headmasters (1987):
This side-scrolling action game was released only in Japan and was made by Takara. This was a sequel to the Mystery of the Convoy. There are five characters: Chromedome, Rodimus Prime, Hardhead, Highbrow, and Brainstorm. Your goal is to find and help Autobots.
Kettou Transformers Beast Wars: Beast Senshi Saikyou Ketteisen (1999):
This game is a Japanese-exclusive 2D fighting game for the Game Boy Color, developed by Gaibrain. It features SD-style characters, allows at-will transformation between robot and beast modes, and features Single and Team battles (similar to King of Fighters)
MOVIE GAMES
(Based on the Michael Bay films)
Transformers: The Game (2007):
This game is a tie-in to the first of the Bay films and was developed by Traveller’s Tales. It is a third-person shooter that follows most of the movie’s plot, but with some special touches, making it unique. The key playable characters are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Ratchet, Starscream, and Barricade. The premise of the game is to find the Allspark and stop the Decepticons from enslaving humanity with it. Although the PSP version takes place in the same universe, it has its own story.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009):
This game was developed by Luxoflux/Beenox and is another tie-in, but to the second Transformers movie by Michael Bay. This game is a third-person shooter that follows a similar plot to the film it's based on, but also does its own twist on things. The Decepticons reemerge from hiding after the death of Megatron in the first game and attempt to revive him, while the Autobots try to find the tomb of the 12 Primes.
The game has a unique dual campaign, one for the Autobots and one for the Decepticons. The playable Autobots are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Ratchet, Breakaway, Jazz, Sideswipe, and Jetfire. The playable Decepticons are Megatron, Starscream, Longhaul, Grindor, Sideways, and Soundwave.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011):
This game was developed by High Moon Studios and acts as a prequel to the Transformers Dark of the Moon film, addressing some of the plot holes in the film, like how the Decepticon Soundwave made it to Earth. Like the other games based on the films, it is a third-person shooter. The playable Autobots are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Mirage, and Sideswipe. The playable Decepticons are Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, and Shockwave ( The Big Four 🥹). Also, this game had something called “Stealth Force”, allowing the player to use weapons in Vehicle Mode.
Transformers: Human Alliance (2013):
This was developed by Sega and is a co-op arcade rail gun shooter; you use the rail guns on the arcade machine to aim and shoot at cars, and sometimes bosses. You do this alongside Bumblebee, Sideswipe, or Optimus Prime across five international locations. The main bosses that you fight are Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave, Skywarp, Scorponok King, Brawler, and Megatron.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014):
This game was developed by DeNA and is a 3D, level based missions, runner, mobile title. A player plays as an Autobot blasting through Decepticons and obstacles. You have the choice to engage in hand-to-hand combat with Decepticons. The available characters were Optimus, Bumblebee, Drift, and Grimlock. There was also an option to play Lockdown, the villain of the film, who is a mercenary, neither Autobot nor Decepticon. This game is also a tie-in to the films.
THE CYBERTRON GAMES
Transformers: War for Cybertron (2010):
Widely considered the best Transformers game, developed by High Noon Studios. This game follows the events of the war before the Autobots fled to Earth. This was a 3rd person shooter with two campaigns. The first one is the Decepticons, and after you can play the Autobot campaign, this game also includes co-op and competitive online multiplayer. The playable Autobots are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Ratchet, Air Raid, Jetfire, Silverbolt, and Warpath.
The playable Decepticons are Megatron, Starscream, Barricade, Brawl, Breakdown, Skywarp, Slipstream, Soundwave, and Thundercracker. There was also DLC and online-exclusive characters for both sides.
Transformers: Cybertron Adventures (2010):
This game is a Nintendo Wii exclusive. It is a third person on-rails shooter developed by Next Level Games. Being on-rails means you can only move (in combat) by switching from cover to cover, shooting from the safety behind it. There are two campaigns, Decepticons and Autobots. The Decepticons follow Megatrons, trying to assert dominance. The Autobot campaign follows Optimus, trying to lead his people to freedom. The playable Autobots include Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Sideswipe, Ironhide, Air Raid, and Jetfire. The playable Decepticons are Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Skywarp, Barricade, and Thundercracker.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (2012):
This game is another runner-up for the title, “Best Transformer Game.” Developed by High Noon Studio, it acts as a sequel to “War for Cybertron,” following up on the final, desperate days of the Autobots and Decepticons, dying in their home, Cybertron. Optimus is trying to lead an escape from Cybertron with his Autobots, while Megatron and the Decepticons intend to make sure that they don't make it out alive. This game series is one of my favorites because it is one of the only things we have about the war on Cybertron before the Autobots fled to Earth, and truly shows the effects of what their civil war has done to their home and people. This game has one campaign, unlike its predecessor, blending the stories between Decepticons and Autobots to form a beautiful game. The playable Autobots are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Cliffjumper, Grimlock, and Jetfire. The playable Decepticons are Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Swindle, Vortex, and Bruticus. Like “War for Cybertron,” this game had competitive multiplayer which I believe had more playable characters than the campaign.
