New York City–famous for its arts, pizza, and museums. Broadway shows, the Statue of Liberty, and Times Square. It’s a busy city with a population of about 8.5 million, not including tourists. There’s so much to see and do everywhere in the city, filled with about 17,000 restaurants and many museums. Whatever interests you, New York City has it!
People can get confused when talking about New York, since there’s the state New York, and the city. Bordering New Jersey to the west, New York City is located in the southern part of New York state. Officially, the city is “New York,” but others refer to it as NYC. It’s made up of five boroughs, which are like divisions.
The city is a hub for the arts, whether it’s music, dance, painting, or acting. The Lincoln Center is a famous place for the arts, housing the Metropolitan Opera House and Juilliard Arts School. There are also many theaters for Broadway, the professional performing arts company. They perform many plays, most of which have won multiple awards. One of their most popular shows is "Wicked," the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz.” The story follows the Wicked Witch and how she is not actually bad, but is seen as evil by everyone. All of the sets are amazing, and the acting as well as the singing is equally good. All of the pieces come together and create a story that immerses the audience. For those familiar with the movie, the production features both parts one and two, creating a tragic yet breathtaking musical.
Carnegie Hall is a world-renowned hall known for its beautiful music and orchestras. It was built between 1890-1891. On the outside, it doesn’t look like much, but on the inside, it’s another world. Inside is decked with red velvet seats, and the color gold surrounds the hall. Many musicians have played there, from different genres. Rock' n’ roll, classical, jazz, and many more have been performed.
Filled with over 170 museums, New York City has many things to see. A famous art museum is the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), which houses multiple artworks. Some, but not the only ones, are “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh, “Campbell Soup Cans” by Andy Warhol, and a multi-panel of “Water Lilies” by Monet are all featured at this museum. There are also more modern paintings and sculptures, if that’s what you prefer.
From Ancient Greece to the American Revolution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) has it all. With over 1.5 million works of art, there’s not enough time in one day to see them all. It has artifacts from all around the world, including the Temple of Dendur from Egypt, helmets from medieval times, and French vases with intricate designs. New exhibitions are introduced from time to time. It can be easy to find yourself lost in the artworks, or even lost in the crowd, so make sure to check their opening and closing times as well as a map!
After watching a show late at night or visiting a museum, most restaurants would be closed. Yet in New York, it's known as the city that never sleeps. Some places are even open until 2:00 a.m.! And wherever you are, there’s good pizza, even in the most random places. A popular place is L’Industrie, a pizza place with a long line. The dough and tomato sauce are very fresh, and there are different choices to choose from. It is common to buy pizza by the slice in this city. This offers more variety for people, especially if you just need a grab-and-go.
Lox, a bagel with cream cheese, salmon, and often red onions or capers, is a known dish in the city. At first, it can sound unappetizing or weird, but you are sure to love it. Many places offer it, but the restaurant Russ & Daughters is an authentic one. Opened in the early 1900s, Russ decided to open a lox bagel shop. They are famous for their different types of salmon, and their potato latkes are worth a try.
Want a different kind of breakfast? Grey Dog has amazing French toast, eggs, and tater-tots. There are multiple locations in NYC. It’s open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., so they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, a recommended dish is the Grey Dog Breakfast. The dish is served with eggs, French toast or pancakes, tater-tots, and a choice of protein.
The state borders the Atlantic Ocean, where there’s a lot of seafood. In New Jersey, there’s a place called The Boil. It offers crab, shrimp, lobster, oyster, and much more. Chewy and juicy, the effort to crack open the seafood’s shell is very worth it. They are served with potatoes, broccoli, and other vegetables. The dish comes in a plastic bag, and they shake it around to mix up the sauce.
With 4.6 stars on Yelp, Kin Ramen is the place to go. Although controversial because it's Japanese food in America, it’s definitely a must-try. During dinner, there’s always a long line of people waiting for the outstanding ramen. People describe the broth as “flavorful, but clean,” and the noodles are chewy and perfectly cooked. The Kin is great for people who don't want spice but crave a homemade broth. Another recommended dish is the Kara Kin, which is spicy with chashu and pork soup. They also have vegan, miso, or curry types.
Of course, these places are not the only things to do; there are just too many to list. This popular city is definitely worth a visit if you can, and it’s easy to see why it’s so famous. If you decide to go, make sure to try going to one of these amazing places!
