You might be wondering, What is Veterans Day? What purpose does it serve? Veterans Day is a national holiday dedicated to honoring all individuals who have served the United States during times of war.
Initially declared a holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, it was officially recognized as a legal holiday in 1938. It was originally referred to as Armistice Day and was meant to pay tribute only to those who fought in World War I. As time went on, particularly after World War II, the idea of transforming Armistice Day into a National Holiday was created. This idea was thought of by Raymond Weeks, who aimed to make the day dedicated to all veterans, and not just those from World War I. He proposed renaming it Veterans Day to reflect this vision of appreciation for all service members. In 1954, after Congress considered his request, it was officially accepted, and President Eisenhower signed the legislation, establishing it as a national holiday. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan honored Raymond Weeks with the Presidential Citizens Medal, acknowledging him as the “Father of Veterans Day.”
Communities from across the nation come together to participate in parades, ceremonies, and various events to showcase their gratitude and respect for veterans. Many people visit war memorials or cemeteries to pay their respects, while others volunteer at organizations that support veterans and families. Whether through quiet moments, special speeches, or meaningful actions, the day is filled with chances to stop and think about the bravery and sacrifices for those who have served. It's a time to listen to veterans' stories, learn from what they've been through, and show our deep thanks for their courage and hard work.
As we come together as a country on Veterans Day, we remember how important it is to be united, show respect, and honor the strong spirit of those who have protected our freedoms. This day not only reminds us of the past but also inspires students to understand the values of helping others, sacrificing for others, and loving our country. Celebrated annually on November 11, Veterans Day is a significant occasion when schools are closed, allowing us to remember and honor the remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to make the United States a better place.
