January 15th is the official day to honor Martin Luther King Jr., but who was he and what did he do? MLK was born on January 15, 1929, and was the middle child of his family. In 1944, he went to college at the age of 15. Since then, he wanted to end segregation for all people. He started peaceful protests and a bus boycott in support of Rosa Parks. He became popular quickly and presented his first speech on April 27, 1944. On August 28, 1963, MLK presented his famous “I Have a Dream” speech about civil rights and ending racism in the U.S. This speech was spread around and helped create the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. However, on April 4, 1968, MLK was assassinated outside of his motel room. MLK has impacted the world with his words and actions, so January 15th will always be the day to remember what he did.
