You may have heard from Mrs. Lloyd or your friends about VASE art competition and if you are in art chances are this opportunity was offered to you.
VASE stands for Visual Arts Scholastic Event. VASE art competition is a regional competition taking place all around Texas. There are different divisions based on the number of art credits the student has, as well as a Junior division. The Junior VASE competition has grades 6-8 compete while the usual competition has grades 9-12 compete. You can enter either a 2d or 3d piece.
There are 22 artists from New Tech participating in VASE art competition. This group will be leaving early in the morning of February 17th on a bus to Harker Heights High School which is where region 12, the region New Tech is zoned to, contest is taking place.
There will be food sold there and likely activities throughout the school. Pieces are scored 1-4, 4 being the best. The pieces scoring a 4 will be laid out in the gym for anyone to look at. Every student participating in this competition was required to fill out an intent form for each piece they were entering as well as a high quality photo of the piece and any reference photos or sketches used. An example of a piece being entered by a student at New Tech is The piece entered by Samaria Spain. She entered a miniature eerie themed house made of cardboard, paper, and more entitled “Alone”. The photos of the pieces were all taken by Makayla Thornburg and then sent to Mrs. Lloyd who uploaded them to the entries.
Mrs. Lloyd has been so supportive and helpful to her students during this process and made it go by so much quicker and easier. Mrs. Lloyd also paid the $30 fee for those entering two pieces. VASE art competition is a wonderful opportunity and experience to all involved. As for Mrs Lloyd’s thoughts on VASE she says, “VASE art competition is a great opportunity for artists in Texas to be creative. ”
A few interviews from the students show the excitement and nerves that come before a competition like this one. Shayla Shannon says “ I am excited for VASE but I'm also nervous about the interview. I have an idea of how the interviews will go because I was in Junior VASE but I'm still a little nervous.” Many other students feel the same way but overall are prepared and excited for VASE. The majority of the students participating in VASE this year also participated in VASE or Junior VASE the year before. When interviewed most students wanted to do VASE to be able to look at the other art pieces or to qualify for a letterman jacket.
