There are two different sections that students have the opportunity to participate in. The first is a mock trial competition where there are two teams acting in a simulation of a trial, similar to a real lawyers court. The second type of competition is called moot court and that is where two teams compete in a case that has already determined a verdict, but will be practicing their arbitration skills and giving an argument towards why their previous argument should have the same outcome.
This year New Tech will be taking more moot court teams to competition than they ever have. This year the law program has its own WIN time (stands for "what you need", a seventh period study hall) and so students are easily able to work on their work, while also being able to participate in other activities in the law pathway such as the Model United Nations.
One thing that Mr. Plemons has enforced into the law program is the power of community and the mindset that even if all of us don't know the answer we will all find it out together. This mindset allows students to be able to talk about their struggles in the class and will eventually allow people to learn and in turn grow together.
Mr. Plemons has made it clear that one of his goals with law is not to prepare students for a test at the end of the year, but instead he wants to instill valuable life information that will benefit students in different careers and other endeavors after high school.
Lastly, the main goal of the law program is not to teach students the right skills for the legal pathway, but instead to teach life lessons that in turn teach students how to become successful law students or even lawyers.
