One of New Tech’s newest editions is the choir program, and today I interviewed New Tech’s choir director to get to know more about the future of this program.
The choir director is Mr. Morehouse, who started teaching choir 20 years ago. Since then, he has taught at two middle schools in Killeen for 14 years: Rancer and Manor, taught elementary music at Chisholm trail for 5 years, and now he teaches part time at New tech and Belton Middle School. He states that he has “always enjoyed music, grew up singing in a church, and sung in choir in middle school and high school, and joined choir in college and [has] also just enjoyed teaching, and being able to be [a] section leader and student director.” He has also brought his choirs to sing at the renaissance fairs and has done mostly community concerts. The best part about choir directors is that they all enjoyed music growing up. As for how our program was created, Mr. Morehouse states that he and the New Tech community are essentially “building it together”. As for the future of the choir, he hopes that they will continue to grow and get more classes going instead of just two classes. He states that the classes are “a small group but are strong and a good group of kids who are ready to sing.” He hopes to be able to attract more people so that the choir program can stand alone as its own program so it can flourish. Things we can look forward to is a Christmas concert on December 6th and a spring concert coming up! Right now the choir is working on Christmas songs that will be sung at the Christmas concert. Sadly, our choir will not be able to compete in UIL but they are doing both of the regions available: one as a group and one where they compete individually. Both are completely optional to the choir students. Lastly, the choir practices at the Pittenger Performing Arts Center.
