Happy New Year!
I hope everyone enjoyed a restful winter break and had time to make special memories with family and friends. While I have cherished my time on maternity leave these last two months, I have truly missed Sapphire—our students, our staff, and the daily energy that makes our school such a special place. I am incredibly grateful for the support and kindness shown to my family during this time, and I am very much looking forward to returning to school on January 20. I cannot wait to be back in the building, reconnecting with students and families, and jumping back into our routines together.
December was a very busy and joyful month at Sapphire. Students enjoyed pajama days, gingerbread house activities, special visitors, and festive sing-alongs. The HS Music students visiting to play and sing holiday music was a highlight, and our UPK students had a magical Polar Express experience. It was wonderful to see so much excitement, creativity, and school spirit throughout the building. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Mrs. Terlecky for her leadership and dedication during my absence. Her hard work ensured that Sapphire continued to run smoothly, and I am truly appreciative of all she did to support our school community.
January brings opportunities to settle back into routines and focus on learning as we begin the new year together. Our “Souper Bowl” Canned Food Drive will begin on January 21, and we will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 19.
January is typically a quieter month, giving us time to work hard, and (hopefully) avoid too many weather-related disruptions. I am so excited to return at the end of the month and work alongside our students, staff, and families as we begin this new chapter of the school year together.
Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy 2026. I look forward to seeing you soon!
Warmly,
Allison Borriello
Principal
Sapphire Elementary School
We're thrilled to welcome two new additions to our Sapphire Family!
Ms. Tellez welcomed a baby boy on 11/16/25 and Ms. Borriello welcomed a baby girl on 11/19/25.
Congratulations to both families- we're wishing them lots of joy and cuddles!
Our hallways are full of holiday cheer! Enjoy these photos showcasing festive hallway and door decorations, along with wonderful student work that brings the season to life throughout Sapphire.
Every year our Kindergarten students make hand wreaths for the retired Pallottine sisters who live in the convent across the road from Sapphire. The elderly sisters look forward to receiving these holiday messages from our students.

SchoolMessenger is the district’s primary parent/guardian notification system. As always, parents and guardians may receive important notifications. If there is a change to the student schedule or if school is closed, we will notify families by 5 a.m. via email, phone, or text (if opted in; see instructions), based on preferences selected on the Parent/Student Portal. Information will also be posted on the district’s website, Facebook page, and Instagram account.
Stay warm, Crusaders!
Has your child lost a jacket? Sweatshirt? T-shirt?
It could be in our Lost and Found area!
Please come in and check in the Main Lobby to see if any of your lost items are here.
As of August 20, 2024, School Messenger has replaced Swift K12 as the district’s parent notification system. As always, parents and guardians may receive important notifications from the district via email, phone call or text.
NEW WITH SM:
Parents and guardians must “OPT IN” to receive text messages via School Messenger. It’s easy and quick! Please take care of it right away!
How to OPT IN to receive text messages:
Text “Y” to the number: 67587 from the phone number you have registered to your Student’s Profile as a contact.
You will receive a text message confirming you have registered to receive text notifications: “You’re registered 4 SchoolMessenger notifications. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help.”
Please note: If you DO NOT “OPT IN” for text notifications, you will NOT receive text notifications. You will only receive phone calls or emails. We encourage you to make your selection as soon as possible to ensure smooth communication with no interruptions.

All students enrolled at Monroe-Woodbury Central School District are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch in school at no charge to your household each day of the 2025-2026 school year.
All students will be able to participate in these meal programs on the first day of school without having to pay a fee or submit an application. All schools provide a breakfast program for students upon entry into school and a lunch program for students in the cafeteria.
School meal programs offer breakfast and lunch meals that meet strict federal nutrition standards, aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and are planned with student preferences in mind. If packing food from home, students can add to their home brought lunch at no cost by choosing at least three of the five items offered, (e.g., low fat milk, proteins, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits), one of which must be a vegetable or fruit. We invite students to show their support for their school food service program through participation.
