Project Vine

at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School

Project Vine by the Numbers...

Each cohort (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior & Senior) have 12 students, so our program has around 4 dozen students at any given time, or around 1 in 13 students at MVRHS is part of Project Vine.

Taken as a three year average, just over half of our graduates ended up in college full time, and another quarter enrolled in specialized training programs such as mechanical or health care. The rest of our graduates went directly into the work force.

Last term, 17 Project Vine students were on eitehr honor roll or high honor roll (and were honored at our regular honor roll breakfast!)

What is Project Vine?

Martha's Vineyard Regional High School offers an alternative high school experience known as Project Vine: an all-voluntary, limited enrollment program which intentionally builds engagement through community participation.

In other words, we do fun stuff together so that you look forward to going to school.

Students in Project Vine take their math, history and English classes together, and meet together regularly for Vine Fridays in place of a regular homeroom. Other than those commitments, our students are still part of the larger MVRHS community--they can still do extracurriculars, take electives like Career-Technical Education, art and language classes along with the rest of their peers.

Students can enter Project Vine starting the second semester of freshmen year. Students who request a spot are interviewed and a cohort of 12 students is selected.  Once part of a cohort/class, they remain with that group of peers and the larger Project Vine program through graduation, though they can re-enter mainstream classes if they chose at the start of a new semester.

Many of their classes, as well as whole program activities, take place in a dedicated space (The Project Vine Suite) of 4 classrooms and a student work area which students are invited to make their own through care and personalization not usually found in public school spaces.

Students in Project Vine have the same standards-based curriculum as their peers, but might demonstrate their mastery through meaningful, authentic contributions to their lives, to the program or to the community which are reviewed by peers, other students, teachers and community members and which they themselves take part in publicizing using our own web presence, as well as school and local media.

By focusing on individual student needs, greater community involvement, interdisciplinary connections, and authentic work, Project Vine strives to provide education for life up to and beyond graduation which enriches intellect, wellness and joy.
