With Tuba being the largest instrument in the band, many believe it would be hard to physically manage, but in fact, the tubas we use for beginners are ¾ size and easy to handle!
Characteristics and Considerations
Physical Characteristics: Tuba players should have a larger lung capacity to support the instrument’s air needs. A strong, upright posture is important for proper breathing and comfort while holding the instrument. The full size tuba requires a larger hand span to comfortably reach the valves, and its larger mouthpiece can be a good fit for students with fuller lips. However, with proper technique and determination, students of all sizes can be successful on tuba.
Other Considerations: Students with an above average amount of orthodontia will find the mouthpiece of the tuba a bit more comfortable than the other brass instruments. Loma Alta provides tubas for students at a cost of $60 rental for an entire school year, but students are required to purchase their own mouthpieces.
