The euphonium is a brass instrument that looks like a small tuba and has a warm, smooth sound. It plays in the middle to low range and is known for its rich sound and ability to play both melody and harmony parts. Players create sound by buzzing their lips into a mouthpiece and pressing button to change notes. The euphonium is often described as one of the most lyrical (singing-like) instruments in the band and is a great choice for students who enjoy expressive, flowing music.
Characteristics and Considerations
Physical Characteristics: Euphonium players should have moderately full lips, but not too full. A SLIGHT overbite is okay, but an underbite would hinder a good sound. The euphonium requires a medium-sized hand span to reach the valves and students should have an above average lung capacity.
Other Considerations: Students with an above average amount of orthodontia will find the mouthpiece of the euphonium a bit more comfortable than trumpet or French horn. Loma Alta provides euphoniums for students at a cost of $60 rental for an entire school year, but students are required to purchase their own mouthpieces.
