35a Coaching Systems Project

In the 2023-2024 school year, MAISA GELN commissioned a research project on the coaching systems that have emerged in the state since the inception of the Read by Grade Three Law and Section 35a(4) funding.  The project sought to answer the following questions:

• What implementation structures for early literacy coaching exist in the state?

• How do ISDs support the implementation and sustainability of effective coaching implementation models?

The project team collected data around seven implementation categories through a statewide survey of ISD leadership, as well as focus groups of ISD leadership and coaching coordinators.  A variety of resources and artifacts were collected from the field in each implementation category. Collection of exemplars is ongoing.

The implementation categories include:  Coach Employment, Coach Deployment, Coach Evaluation, Coaching Agreements, Coaching Supports, Data Collection, and Coach and Teacher Work.
