Burnett Elementary School
September is Attendance Awareness Month!
Did You Know....
- Many absences, even in kindergarten, can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing just a day or two every month can make it harder to learn to read by the third grade.
- Students with too many absences struggle to catch up, even with take-home assignments.
- Burnett and MUSD's funding is based on our average daily attendance. One day of attendance per student is about $51.
Please note the following calendar changes:
- Minimum Day moved from January 24th, 2019 to January 17th, 2019
- Staff In-service Day (No School) moved from January 25th, 2019 to January 18, 2019
- Bulldog Bash moved from January 24th, 2019 to January 25th, 2019
Dear Burnett Students and Families,
The Burnett Staff and I would like to formally welcome you all back to the 2018-2019 school year! I look forward to seeing all of our returning families and students and welcoming our new Burnett students and families as well! We look forward to continuing Burnett’s traditions and commitment to providing an innovative, engaging education for all children.
I am thrilled to be serving you this year as the principal of Burnett! This year marks my 13th year in education. I taught for 8 years in Santa Clara before working with a local educational nonprofit for 3 years. Last year, as many of you know, I had the pleasure of serving as Burnett’s Assistant Principal. It is with great humility, excitement, and joy that I begin this year as your principal!
Burnett is a special place with a staff that cares deeply about all of its students. All Burnett staff members challenge, inspire, and support students to engage in authentic, challenging curriculum and to reach their fullest potential. I look forward to continuing to work with you as a partner in your child’s education!
The 2018-2019 school year is shaping up to be a great one for our Bulldogs! Our teachers are collaboratively working on developing units and lessons that align with the Common Core State Standards and promote the 4 Cs (collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking) along with the 3 Rs: rigor, relevance, and relationships. As you know, each classroom is outfitted with Chromebooks and each grade level has access to a full class set of Chromebooks as well. All of our students will also continue to have access to our STEM Center and participate in a comprehensive STEM program.
In order to engage and reach every student, every day, all of our teachers collaboratively design learning environments where students have the opportunity to work in small groups with their teacher, in small collaborative groups with their peers, and independently as we leverage technology platforms to personalize learning. We will continue our journey into Project-Based Learning, which will also help to personalize learning for our students.
We are also excited about the continuation of our SEAL model for English language development, which is being implemented in our TK-3 classrooms.
In order for your child to reach his/her potential, it is crucial that you play an active role in his/her education. I strongly encourage you to discuss and model for your child the importance of school along with taking advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities provided for them here at Burnett. Never underestimate the role you play in the success of your child.
I am looking forward to an incredible school year working with you all!
If you have any questions, my door is always open. Always feel welcome to stop by and say hello.
