On October 8th, 2022, a massive explosion shook the Kerch Bridge and the surrounding area. You might have seen this in the news, but you may wonder, why does this matter? The Kerch Bridge was a bridge connecting Crimea and Russia.
Since 2014, Russia has controlled both Crimea and the Kerch Bridge, but what makes it significant is the fact that it is the only bridge connecting Crimea and Russia, and since Russia’s invasion, it has gained enormous importance. It has been crucial to ferrying military supplies and soldiers from Russia, becoming essentially the only supply route for the entire southern front. It was accompanied by a rail bridge, which carried the majority of supplies.
With the cause still unknown, there have been solutions presented. Russian media has said it was a truck bomb, but it is obvious it wasn’t. For one, the truck was not at the center of the explosion, as seen from in many videos and pictures online. In those same pictures, there is a car driving next to the supposedly exploded truck, but is seen driving away, completely unharmed.
According to a statement by the Russian government, it will be repaired by July 2023. In conclusion, it is entirely false that it was a truck bomb that destroyed the Kerch Bridge, and it will have a massive impact on the course of the war.
