Genshin Impact, an action role-playing fantasy game developed by miHoYo, with over 50 million active players, was released in 2020. With over 63 million monthly active players gained throughout the years, Genshin has profited $3.7 billion just by mobile alone. However, most of the more serious spenders, including streamers, play Genshin on PC, therefore it would not be surprising if the total profit doubles.
Genshin’s profits come from limited-time banners (around 20 days each switch), including rare 5-star characters that can only be obtained by spending what’s called “primo gems” in the “wishing” system. Even though players can obtain primos gems through events and other ways, some players choose to spend money to get many copies of the character to unlock higher abilities or obtain powerful 5-star weapons. The banner that brought in the most revenue (more than $35 million dollars) was Kamisato Ayaka, on her second banner ever, meaning the second chance for players to wish for her.
Genshin Impact, being an open-world game, only released 3 of the 7 “countries” the main character has to go through. Including many events and possibly hidden regions within the countries, Genshin has unimaginable potential for even more profits and gain in players.
