Back to school - how exciting! Yet similarly to last year, things are going to be a little bit different this upcoming year. Social distancing in the cafeteria line, mask mandates, and sanitization are just some of the Covid-19 safety protocols that Mulgrave has implemented. However, even now, in the midst of this global pandemic, Mulgrave students are still attending school in person. Back-to-school news includes the following; the student election, the Terry fox run, and Mulgrave students’ opinions on this new school year - and what it could mean.
Student Vote
The student election was quite successful this year! With over 250 students casting their votes and a spectrum of political beliefs from students from the Middle and Senior schools. The student vote is important because we, as the future generations, will also be the future of voting and the Canadian government. Who we stand with now may allow people to hypothesize what parties will be most successful in the upcoming years. Mirroring the federal election the students of Mulgrave also heavily supported the Liberal and Conservative parties, with the Liberals narrowly pulling ahead by 3 votes.
Terry Fox Run
The Terry Fox run, annually held at Mulgrave took place on September 14th for grades 6-12. The run commemorates Terry Fox, a Canadian man who set a goal to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research after he himself lost a leg to the disease. Even though he did not succeed, he ran over 3300 kilometres and raised over 24 million dollars for cancer research. This year, over 1,000 laps of the field and parking lot were run by Mulgrave Students.
Back to School Opinions
To gain a better understanding of how Mulgrave students felt about the return to school I spoke to three students from varying grades. A third-grade student commented, "I’m worried that [COVID] is going to get worse and more restrictions are going to be required.” Whereas one grade ten student, Ella Levy, noted "With the way Mulgrave is handling things, I feel very safe and it's nice we’ve been able to start sports again.” While some things are always changing, especially student opinions, some things never change - like how excited students are to be back. Clay, from grade six, said “I’m super excited for having assemblies where people perform,” once the pandemic has become less of an emergency situation.
Welcome back everyone, and good luck for the next year!
