Did you know that modern field hockey was created in 1861 and is the second most popular sport in the world? In fact, India is the country where field hockey is the most popular. Crazy! On Sunday, November 22nd, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tatiana Calderon (Grade 7), a player on the Sea to Sky Field Hockey team (Whistler Division), in order to understand what she thought about the club. When I asked her what she thought made the Sea to Sky Field Hockey Club different from other clubs, she said: “They don’t teach us to win …, they teach us to play the game.”
According to their website, the Sea to Sky Field Hockey Club was founded in 2016 by Ronald & Stefanie Prins, Gary Boddington (Olympian), and Peter van den Berg, who all grew up with a different “Hockey is a way of life” experience. The Club was created so the founders’ children could grow up and flourish with what they had in their life: field hockey. The Club was built on three pillars: Skills Development, Social Environment, and Competitive and enjoyable play.
When I asked Tatiana what she liked about field hockey, she told me that the Club has taught her to use skill and stick development to make easy passes and be able to use her stick in the correct way. She told me that you have to use your stick in a specific way to get past people when needed. She also says that even though it’s like every other sport with the positioning, there is a lot of stick skills you need to know to understand the game.
When I asked her what she liked about the Club, she said: “Well, the coaches used to be from a national league from Canada, so our coaches are really good, and they… have a lot of knowledge about field hockey, so they teach us about positioning and good strategies to make us better players.” This shows that in addition to inspiring the founders’ children to like field hockey, they have also inspired other children to get in on the action.
While the Club practices and plays normally around Vancouver, Tatiana’s division always practices at Mulgrave school, which makes it easier for all the Mulgrave students to practice! One of the things that is really important about the Club is how much they want their players to improve not only in field hockey but in life. “It definitely helps with my stamina because we have to do ... warm-ups which is a long time for us and helped me gain stamina because before I joined field hockey my stamina was not that good and I couldn’t run for a long period of time but, now I can,” Tatiana stated. Overall, the Sea to Sky Field Hockey Club seems like a great place to play field hockey!
