About Illusion Robotics

Illusion Robotics is Merced County's first and only FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team. Currently, the team is comprised of 23 El Capitan High School students ranging from grades 9th to 12th grade. The faculty advisor is Mr. Tony Doyle, ECHS Teacher Librarian. The team is mentored by 5 students from the University of California, Merced (Marqose Saephan, Alexus Garcia, Jesse Vick, Armando Mora, and JoeAngel Miramontes) and 1 student from Fresno State (Gary Gong).

FIRST is a non-profit organization that aims to promote Interest in STEM among students of all ages and backgrounds. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a program designed for students from 9th to 12th grade in which each team is given six weeks to design and build a robot that can complete objectives that vary with each season's challenge. In addition to learning technical skills, FIRST students acquire business, public relations, and cooperation skills. All these skills are put to the test while working alongside multiple teams to form alliances at events.

Illusion Robotics finished its first FRC competition at the 2016 Central Valley Regional in Madera, CA. Out of 49 teams-- including 4 world champions-- Illusion finished 10th and won the Rookie Inspiration Award. We were able to build an elegant, reliable robot on a shoe-string budget, with borrowed tools, and with generous donations of parts and expertise from IronHorse Robotics 2761. Our students have shown themselves to be enthusiastic, resourceful, and creative and they are ready to improve upon the results of their first season. Therefore, in order to represent Merced County to the best of our ability and to help other Merced County schools start teams of their own, Illusion Robotics is requesting assistance from local businesses, organizations, and individuals.
