Copper Country Workshop

on Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Data Sciences

Michigan Technological University (MTU)

Organizers: Yanfang Liu (George Washington University), Jiguang Sun (MTU), Yang Yang (MTU), and Qian Zhang (MTU)

Mathematics and statistics play indispensable roles in data science. The workshop intends to bring leading researchers to discuss the recent developments in applied mathematics, statistics, data sciences, and build collaborations among the participants from different areas.

Michigan Technological University is located in Houghton on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which has a history as rich as its native copper deposit, the largest in the world. Mining companies in Michigan built deep mine shafts to access copper deposits, refining over 10 billion pounds of copper between 1840 and 1969. This is why the region is called "Copper Country".

Houghton's summer climate tends to be especially pleasant, as hot temperatures are often moderated by the cool waters of the nearby Lake Superior. The ruggedly beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the Midwest’s top year-round recreation destinations, thanks to its record snowfalls and comfortable summers. Surrounded on three sides by Lake Superior, the Keweenaw was rated one of the top-ten outdoor adventure spots in the country by National Geographic Adventure Magazine.
