Hello Villagers,

This is Mr. Dolan and I really miss doing the news every day and I am sure you do as well. I have been doing it for about 14 years and it took a Pandemic to temporarily pause the news. Thankfully David did a newscast from his home yesterday and inspired us to get the news going again. Mr. Dolan will contact your teacher and invite students who didn't get a chance to be a newscaster first. Below are a few tips to get you started if you are interested in doing a Newscast.

NEWS TIPS:

  • Have a plain background. If you want to add props, add a US flag or World map as your background, display a picture on a TV and stand next to it. Do a broadcast outdoors(just watch out for wind noise)

  • An iPhone or similar camera phone works great. If you get the Google Drive App on the phone, you can upload the video directly to your Google Drive and share it with Mr. Dolan. You can also use the built-in Camera on an iPad, Chromebook or laptop. Just remember to keep the camera still for a steady video.

  • Film the newscast by holding your phone/camera HORIZONTALLY/LANDSCAPE.

  • Use a laptop to scroll the script for your child as an improvised teleprompter.

  • If you are reporting on the weather- consider doing it outside. Feel free to use an umbrella as a prop on a rainy day.

  • If you are a guest reporter- consider any props that could add interest to the broadcast. For example if you are doing a book review hold up a picture of the book.

  • Practice a few times and do a recording. Make sure the recording looks and sounds good and then share it with Mr. Dolan.

So what do I do next....

Mr. Dolan will share a script with you. If there are guest reporters then it will be shared with other students. Finalize the script and share the video with Mr. Dolan the day before so he has time to combine the videos and have it ready for the next morning.
