Integrated Physical, Environmental, and Life Sciences (IPELS) is a college-preparatory laboratory science designed for students taking their first science course at MHS. The course explores natural phenomena through an interdisciplinary approach, integrating physics, environmental science, and life sciences. Students examine topics from both scientific and societal perspectives.
The curriculum incorporates engineering design principles and emphasizes the development of scientific models related to Earth and space systems, global climate science, and forces and interactions between objects. Through hands-on investigations, students design lab experiments, analyze data to explore cause-and-effect relationships, create scientific representations, compare structure and function, and build an understanding of energy storage modes. They also identify patterns by analyzing proportions and quantities.
In IPELS, students will develop essential scientific skills, including asking questions, planning investigations, analyzing data, and communicating findings within their learning community. The course aligns with New Jersey State and National Standards to elevate student discourse and strengthen scientific reasoning.
A recurring theme of energy is introduced in IPELS, which continues into subsequent courses like chemistry and biology. This course is open to all students.
