Advances in science and technology have produced a rapidly changing world. We believe Montgomery students should have a thorough understanding of the concepts of science and the interrelationships between science, technology, mathematics, and society in order to navigate the challenges of a world that changes so quickly. Our elementary science program strives to provide students with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary to become scientifically literate world citizens capable of making informed, logical, and wise decisions. Our curriculum is aligned to the NJ Student Learning Standards in Science.
Weather
Students will use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time. They will notice that the patterns in the weather are based on the change of the seasons and that people use these patterns to predict weather. Students will look for evidence on how plants and animals can change their environment to meet their needs. They will make observations on the effects of sunlight on earth’s surface. Students will also discover that the sun warms the earth. Students will also come up with solutions on how humans can reduce their impact on earth’s environment.
Living Things
Throughout this unit, students will use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. Students will discover that living things need water and resources, and they live in places that have the things they need. Students will learn that living things survive because they get the things they need. Children will experience nature walks and helping to create an environment for a living thing in the classroom where they are providing it with the resources it needs in order to survive. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, make observations, and father information about simple problems. Students can use sketches, drawings, or models to come up possible solutions as well as test those solutions.
Pushes & Pulls
In kindergarten, students are informally introduced to Physical Science ideas in the unit Pushes and Pulls. In this unit, students will plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object. Students will be exploring different sized, weight, and shaped balls. After experimenting, students will use their findings to determine their solution as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull.
In Kindergarten, students will learn about what makes a civil and functioning community inside and outside of the school walls. Children focus on how democracy is part of rule making, leadership, and getting along with one another and learn ways to work together as a class community.
