In first grade, teachers provide:
Whole group reading instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary.
Teacher led small group instruction to differentiate, reinforce concepts and assess the transfer of skills.
Weekly independent activity options that connect to weekly content learned in whole group lessons.
Students will:
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and draw on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions to spell other words phonetically.
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension
Develop and answer questions about key ideas and details in a text. Retell the story, describing characters and how characters change over time.
Use writing to document their thinking about first grade topics and vocabulary.

Whole group writing instruction in handwriting, spelling, language and conventions.
Teacher led small group instruction to differentiate, reinforce concepts and assess the transfer of skills during guided writing.
Writing process practice for independent application of skills to individual writing pieces.
Students will:
Provide a beginning, middle and a simple ending
Use simple word transitions and temporal words or pictures that link ideas.
Experiment with descriptive words to describe feelings, events, and images.
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about topics and texts.
Be encouraged to focus on the content, spelling and grammar. Not every piece will come home polished. The writing is revised and edited by students with teacher guidance.
Reading and writing are infused into all of our content areas of math, social studies and science.
