What is the Gömöri Stain?
The Gömöri stain, also known as the Gömöri trichrome stain, is a polychromatic muscle stain. What is unique about the Gömöri stain is its ability to show red-ragged fibers characteristic of Myoclonic epilepsy with red-ragged fibers (MERRF), a rare mitochondrial disease. Red-ragged fibers are only identifiable with the Gömöri stain.

The Gömöri stain is hazardous, causing skin corrosion/irritation, serious eye damage/irritation. Further, the Gömöri stain is a single exposure toxin to the respiratory system. It is reccomended you wear lab goggles, gloves, and a mask/respirator.
If inhaled, go outside and breathe fresh air. If symptoms arise, call a doctor and/or poison control. If in contact with skin, wash with soap and water and remove affected clothing items. If symptoms arise, call a doctor. If in contact with eyes, wash with water, removing contacts if present. If symptoms arise, call a doctor.

The red color in a stained muscle sample can be indicative of red-ragged fibers, and suggest a possible MERRF diagnosis. However, not all red coloration can be attributed to red-ragged fibers- use caution when interpreting micrograph results.
