Welcome to the Transition Checklist. This is intended to serve as a guide of advised actions in the transition from Moodle to Canvas.

Goal: Ensure your intellectual property and student records are safe before the Moodle "Capture Date."
Review Moodle Course History: LITS is migrating the most recent iteration of each unique course from the last four academic years. Review your own past courses using the "My Courses" page in Moodle to determine if you have any unique cases that warrant an additional course migration. If yes, follow the step below.Â
Request Additional Moodle Course Migration (Deadline May 30): For courses that occurred more than four years ago or are not covered by our migration plan, complete our request form by May 30.Â
Download Course Materials & Student Records (Deadline June 30): To comply with Provost retention policies, faculty must manually export Gradebooks and Student Submissions (assignments, etc.) for the Spring 2026 term. Consult the Moodle LibGuide to backup or save content from Moodle.
Backup Vital Documents: Manually save copies of your syllabi, core readings, and personal files to your MHC Google Drive.
Identify "Manual Rebuild" Content: Audit your courses for Moodle Lessons, Feedback modules, or complex Quizzes. These do not always migrate seamlessly and must be rebuilt in Canvas.
Goal: Get comfortable in the new environment using your private Sandbox.
Update your Browser: Please use the latest version of Chrome/Firefox. Consult LITS Support for assistance.
Log in to Canvas: Access Canvas here mtholyoke.instructure.com and ensure your MHC credentials work.
Locate Your Sandbox: Find your private "Sandbox" site on the Dashboard. This is your permanent "scratchpad" for testing.
Check out "Growing with Canvas": Explore the self-paced training modules, located on your Canvas Dashboard.
Attend Live Trainings as announced on this site.
Goal: Move from "practice" to "production" for your Fall 2026 courses.
Verify Migrated Content: Once your 4-year history is moved, check your new Canvas shells to ensure files and folder structures are intact.
Apply the MHC Course Template: Use the standardized Mount Holyoke template to ensure your "Home Page" and "Course Navigation" match the student experience across the college.
Rebuild Interactive Elements: Recreate any Lessons or Feedback modules that did not survive the automated migration.
Sync Third-Party Tools: Re-establish links for Zoom, Gradescope, and Kaltura within your Canvas course menu.Â
Goal: Open your course to students and manage it via mobile.
Set Notification Preferences: Adjust your settings to control how often you receive Canvas alerts in your email.
Download the "Canvas Teacher" App: Install the app (iOS/Android) to grade and message students from your mobile device.
Publish Your Course: Ensure the "Publish" button is clicked before the first day of Fall classes.Â
