The Bottom Line: Don't buy packs unless they're discounted (sometimes happens in Daily Deals). Never spend money on any deal that’s always available. One-time deals and limited-time deals can be okay; see the entry on How to Spend Real Money. Buy cosmetics only if you really like them and you’re okay with slowing down your collection progress.
Check Daily Deals every day for free stuff. You usually won’t find any, but sometimes they have free gold, free gems, discounted packs, or discounted Draft Tokens.
You should only buy discounted packs if they are from a Standard-legal set. Purchasing packs from standard-legal sets in the store advances your progress toward Golden Packs, and discounted packs still count. Purchasing packs from older sets does NOT advance your Golden Pack progress, and neither do ANY packs earned as rewards.
It can also be a fun game to try and figure out the theme of the rest of the deals. Usually it’s something boring like “good commons from the latest set,” but every now and then you’ll find something amazing like this, which was available on International Mens’ Day:
