GLG 431 Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Lab

Course Description

Sediments, sedimentary rocks, sedimentary processes, and depositional environments through geologic time. Facies event correlation. Fossils as tools in stratigraphy and environmental analysis. Biostratigraphy, paleoecology and taphomony.

Key teaching duties

The key teaching duties that I performed while instructing this class included:

  • Syllabus and lesson development
  • Creation and implementation of weekly formative assessments, mid-semester and end of semester summative assessments
  • Instructed students in hand sample description and identification of sedimentary rocks and structures
  • Instructed students in the use of petrographic microscopes for description and identification of sedimentary rocks in thin section
  • Assisted in planning of several field trips throughout the semester to locations to observe sedimentary core samples and in-situ sedimentary structures
  • Organized and led weekly field trips exploring the local sedimentary geology on campus
  • Provided instruction and feedback for field note instruction for students
