Objectives
The main aim of Geography Department is to provide secondary school geographical education for our students. Geography as a subject aims to enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of space, place and environment, in particular the spatial arrangement of places and the interaction between human and the environment, to develop geographical skills and basic competencies for further studies and life situations and to be informed and responsible citizens who are willing to contribute to the sustainable development of human societies and the natural environment. The junior secondary (S1-3) Geography curriculum is designed to involve students in enquiring the issue in local context (Hong Kong) and then extending their investigation to national (China), regional (Asia and the Pacific) and finally to global scale. The senior secondary Geography curriculum is built on the knowledge and skills students have developed in the junior secondary curriculum. The HKDSE Geography curriculum (S4-6) comprises of a compulsory part and an elective part. The compulsory part comprises seven geographical issues and problems that have strong relevance for Hong Kong students and are expected to be of considerable public concern for a reasonable period of time. The elective part serves as an extension to the compulsory part of the curriculum. Two selected electives can develop further the basic geographical concepts and knowledge included in the compulsory part.
Elements of moral and civic education such as respect for others, appreciation, be considerate, civic & social concern, sustainability, national identity, love & care and so on are integrated in the curriculum. Generic skills like collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity and so on are also emphasized through the learning of Geography. Map skills are all included in the curriculum so that our students are well-equipped with the skills that are essential for the study of Geography as well as for practical use in their lives.
