The Zones of Regulation

THE ZONES OF REGULATION is a curriculum designed to foster self-regulation and emotional self control. The curriculum is based on four zones:

  • BLUE ZONE = tired, sad, bored
  • GREEN ZONE = happy, calm, focused
  • YELLOW ZONE = nervous, confused, silly
  • RED ZONE = out of control feelings

Our classroom lessons focus on:

  • the feelings of each zone
  • expected and unexpected behaviors
  • how our behavior impacts others
  • understanding different perspectives
  • what feelings we have in different situations
  • idioms and expressions and our feelings
  • zones across our days
  • triggers and our feelings
  • calming tools and strategies
  • size of the problem matching size of our reactions
  • our inner critic and our inner coach
  • using the ZONES language to communicate our needs and feelings with others
