Mingdao High School, founded in 1969, was previously named “Wu Xun High School.” In 1968, Mr. Wang Kuang-Ping and Mr. Wang Fu-Lai restored the school, reorganized the board of directors, and appointed Mr. Wang Kuang-Ping as the principal and Mr. Wang Fu-Lai as the chairman of the board. The following year, to emphasize “Sage learning” and inherit “Dao-orthodoxy,” the name Wu Xun was officially changed to Mingdao, with “honestly, piety, self-discipline, and diligence” as the school mottos for spirit education objectives. At the beginning of the school, Principal Wang Kuang-Ping led the faculty to hold their beliefs and concentrate on education, reformed the school organization, strengthened administrative management, implemented the homeroom teacher system, consolidated the policy of “frontline priority,” and dedicated themselves to elevating learning and teaching quality.
Principal Wang Kuang-Ping highly valued humanities education. He founded the Mingdao Literature Magazine, established the Chinese Literature Hall and Modern Literature Hall, and held literature awards. He enriched students’ characters with literature, fitting it into the school’s environment. With the efforts of the faculty, Mingdao was gradually recognized, recruiting many students in junior, senior, and vocational high departments. To meet the needs of social progress at the time, a night school was also founded. As the school building, landscape, and teaching facility radically upgraded, school development, and teaching outcomes became prominent, making it an excellent example of running private schools.
In 1994, Principal Wang Kuang-Ping retired. Dr. Wang Da-Yung succeeded him as the next principal. Dr. Wang was of great enlightened views and had studied in the United States of America. He founded the Research Development Affairs, seeking to improve administrative efficiency with the help of technologies, promoting a flat organization framework, and introducing the ISO-9001 quality management system. In 1997, the Comprehensive High School system was implemented. On the 30th anniversary of Mingdao, in 2000, talents, characters, and humanities became the holistic education objectives. Principal Wang Da-Yung transferred to higher education, while Mr. Wang Ta-jyou succeeded him as the next principal.
Principal Wang Ta-jyou, who used to be a computer engineer in Silicon Valley in the USA, was a far-sighted and logical person who excelled at problem-solving. Based on the current foundation of Mingdao, he kept the inheritance, developed transformation, and fostered innovation. Therefore, a professional Information Technology Center was founded, building the Mingdao Cloud Platform for teachers, parents, and students. Principal Wang Ta-jyou adapted admin teams to be highly efficient, interactive, and flexible, elevated training in teachers’ workshops, and implemented teacher professional development communities and collaborative lesson preparation. Moreover, Principal Wang Ta-jyou, holding the “student-centered” beliefs, set “Discover Yourself” as the education objective, stressing the importance of “curriculum is everything; everything is curriculum,” reinforcing the “six-year curriculum” with the help of cross-cooperation among departments. Beyond Mingdao, Principal Wang Ta-jyou took a proactive approach to academic interaction locally and globally, integrated various resources to develop the most featured international education. With these, Principal Wang Ta-jyou was able to constitute a student learning map and a common vision, making Mingdao a pioneer in education.
During Principal Ta-jyou’s tenure, efforts were made to strengthen various hardware equipment and to create a green campus that promotes energy conservation, ecology, and environmental protection. The Ming-De and Ming-Jin buildings were renovated into the “Ming-Jin Creativity” building, providing a more comfortable growing space for teachers and students. Many forward-looking plans were also promoted, such as developing and enhancing the educational philosophy of “talents, characters, and humanities.” During the 40th anniversary of the school, the six major development themes were established as “Character Education, Knowledge Consolidation, Humanities Literacy, Social Care, Cultural Innovation, and International Perspectives.” Diverse and innovative spirits were integrated into teaching to guide students to “discover yourself” in Mingdao.
In 2007, MDHS established an international department with a six-year curriculum for Grades 7 to 12, introducing the American Common Core and Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. Starting in 2015, the school program was transformed into the International Baccalaureate (IB) MYP/DP curriculum, making it the first IB World School in central Taiwan. MDHS is expecting to achieve nationwide recognition for the IB Career-related Program (CP) certification by 2023.
In 2015, the “Mingdao Building,” which was the first building constructed when Mingdao was founded, was demolished and rebuilt. Taking this chance, the front square was also redesigned. In addition, facilities such as a Planetarium, a Fablab, a Biolab, a TEDx hall, MOOCs classroom, and “A Window to the World” were built. MDHS provided students with superior education by introducing university and industry resources and recruiting scientists and engineers.
In October 2019, it was when MDHS celebrated its 50th anniversary that the new 12-Year Basic Education was also launched. With the preparation team members holding the student-centered beliefs in mind, which has always been the school education philosophy since the school establishment, they came together and reached a consensus to reshape the education and build a century-long educational legacy. The main themes of the celebration, “Forward-looking” and “The Next 50 Years” in both Chinese and English, were chosen, signifying the determination to create a role model for talent cultivation in Taiwan’s education system. “Forward-looking” represents the vision and perspective of “Mingdaonian” looking towards the future, while “The Next 50 Years” shows the endurance and leadership of “Mingdaonian” in providing high-quality education. In the same year, two guidance scales, Mingdao’s “core competencies,” and the 12-year national curriculum’s “core literacy” were developed based on the ideas and achievements of Mingdao over the past 50 years. MDHS integrated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Mingdao’s educational goals and published the paper “The Establishment and Achievements of Mingdao Sustainable Development Platform” in the Journal of Education Research, settling “Mingdao Paradigm” brand with the five pillars of health, humanity, science, innovation, and internationalization. In 2020, MDHS was awarded the National Sustainable Development Award by the Executive Yuan, making it the only primary and secondary school in the education category to receive this award nationwide. We were once again awarded in 2022.
The development of the school is closely related to the local community. When MDHS was established, it was located in Rende Village, Wuri District, Taichung County. Even when the former principal retired in 1994, he lamented that Mingdao had already excelled nationally in terms of educational standards, but many still regarded it as a rural school. However, since the establishment of the high-speed rail station in Wuri in 2007 and the upgrade of Taichung County to a direct-controlled municipality in 2010, with Wuri becoming a secondary city center, transportation and local development have facilitated rapid growth of the school. In 2021, the Taichung MRT Green Line was opened, with four out of the 18 stations located in Wuri. It takes only seven minutes to walk from Jiude Station to the school, and in 2022, both the first and second entrances of MDHS were equipped with YouBike 2.0 stations. MDHS, through the “Wuri Life Circle Project,” has guided teachers and students to embrace a new lifestyle with the MRT. Over a thousand people commute by MRT to and from school daily, reducing the number of students relying on school buses from over 5,000 to over 3,000. The Mingdao Life Circle Project was invited to the Taipei City Government Conference on Transportation hosted by the Taipei City Mayor, Chiang Wan-an, in 2023 to share its achievements.
In 2022, after more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, MDHS reached a consensus on the Mingdao education development in the post-pandemic era with teachers and students. This included making good use of technology to assist learning and cultivating self-disciplined and reflective autonomous learners. Additionally, MDHS organized cross-department and cross-grade Special Interest Groups (SIG), combining learning guidance and career counseling to shape a culture of autonomous learning on campus in the new curriculum era. In 2023, the upgraded SIG 2.0 platform was launched, breaking the boundaries of time and space to allow students with shared interests to learn from each other. This also aligns with the new era of AI learning. At the same time, in response to the 2030 Bilingual Nation Policy, Mingdao has integrated bilingual education with sustainability and international education to develop a unique Trinity Project, combining three major initiatives under one unified vision.
Since 2019, Mingdao High School has partnered annually with the Taiwan Association of Primary and Secondary Education Professionals to host forward-looking education forums, focusing on talent cultivation. In 2022, the discussion was elevated to the constitutional level, addressing the freedom of private education and strategic development for private schools. That same year, over 120 private secondary schools nationwide were invited to form the “National Alliance of Private Secondary Schools”, or the “Private School Alliance.” Through collective strength, the alliance continues to provide policy recommendations and foster a collaborative and mutually beneficial educational environment. In addition, a consensus was reached with 15 private junior high schools in Taichung City to abolish written entrance examinations starting from the 2023 academic year (Academic Year 112), transitioning fully to diversified admission methods. This initiative has contributed to improving the quality of elementary education in Taichung and has received recognition from both education authorities and parents.
In 2022, during its 53rd-anniversary celebration, Mingdao High School launched the “MingdaoVerse” project, leading teachers and students an integrated virtual and real future with innovative interactions and technology.
In 2023, in response to the global trend of generative AI, the school took the lead in developing the “AI for Edu” initiative, incorporating artificial intelligence into curriculum design, teaching practices, and assessment. A career navigation system was also developed as part of this initiative. In collaboration with the Taiwan Association of Primary and Secondary Education Professionals, the school published the Journal of Forward-Looking Education. To further promote practical AI applications in education, Mingdao compiled and published two professional teaching resources based on its front-line use of tools such as ChatGPT: Practices of ChatGPT in Mingdao Classrooms and ChatGPT in Teaching and Assessment.
2024年4月更以「永續」為主題,主辦為期ㄧ週的全英語亞太青少年領袖峰會APYLC(Asia-Pacific Young Leaders Convention)邀請新加坡、印尼、日本、中國等師生共襄盛舉。
In 2023, Mingdao High School compiled and published Taiwan’s first School Voluntary Review (SVR) on the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in primary and secondary education. In April 2024, the school hosted a week-long Asia-Pacific Young Leaders Convention (APYLC), held entirely in English under the theme of sustainability. The event welcomed students and teachers from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, China.
In the same year, the school revised its Mid- to Long-Term Development Plan to follow a five-year cycle. The period from 2019 to 2023 marked the pilot phase of the “Mingdao Paradigm,” themed “Branding Mingdao.” The 2024–2028 phase now enters a stage of in-depth implementation with the theme “Happy Mingdao,” focusing on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and life education. Six key initiatives are being promoted: refined teaching, efficient administration, four-dimensional guidance, self-directed learning, collaborative parent-teacher-student engagement, and alumni empowerment.
Looking beyond 2025, as global trade is restructured under new tariff systems and the world order grows increasingly uncertain, schools are called to shoulder greater social responsibility. Mingdao High School will continue to innovate across its four academic divisions—Junior High, Senior High, Vocational High, and the International Department—fostering a school culture that emphasizes teacher professional development and student self-directed learning. Keeping the spirit of innovation and foresight, the school aspires to move from “Discover Yourself at Mingdao” to “Let the World Discover Mingdao,” advancing toward the vision of becoming a leading school in Taiwan and a globally recognized happy school.
