Contact me here at school. I would prefer that you don't call my cell for homework questions, grade issues, or similar concerns. For all homework questions, please refer to this website or contact one of your child's peers. I will focus on any other concerns the next school day.
It is not that I don't want to hear and address your needs or concerns. I spend the majority of every day as Mr. Herriott, the 5th grade teacher. While at home I play many roles, including the roles of father and husband full-time. In addition, I don't always have the information you are wanting with me at home and will have to get it the next day anyway. Thanks for understanding.
Students in 5A will be ordering from Scholastic during the year. Deadlines for book orders will always be on the afternoon of the last day of the week. Usually this is Friday. Orders usually take one week to arrive.
When ordering, please use the code GJQKV at checkout so that my classroom is credited with the order and we get free books! 5A is doing only online orders this year.
One written report and one project are required for each trimester. The project can be any creative way of presenting the book to the class. Projects are all shared orally on the day that the report is due. I would highly recommend that the students use index cards to keep their notes ready for their presentation.
All book reports must also have a cover page and plot diagram which details certain information for me. This must be done for full credit. These forms are available in my classroom and also online on the "Downloads and Study Guides" page, which can be found under the Parent Resources page. These forms should be ready prior to giving the report. Complete sentences must be written to receive full credit.
I do get this question a lot and it reminds me of how fortunate I am to work in a community where education and parent support is so strong.
Here are some items that are very helpful throughout the year:
- Paper towels (our school paper towels have very little absorbancy)
- Books your child is finished reading (this adds to the classroom library)
- Classroom snacks. We have a late lunch and the kids truly appreciate this. Individually packaged and store bought please.
- Your gifts / talents (If you have a particular skill / specific specialty or knowledge area / or are willing to share your time with the students, I'd love for you to come to our classroom or make a virtual visit.) I will also request parent volunteers from time to time.
- I do have an Amazon wishlist. The link can be found on the homepage.
Thanks!
Unfortunately, we no longer have birthday treats at Lincoln Trail.
Snacks are a bit different, however. Please bring only healthy snacks. Chips, pop, high-sugar foods, and messy snacks are not allowed in 5A. Also, be aware of classroom allergies. This is a nut free classroom. No peanuts or tree nuts are allowed in any form. It is very helpful if any snack that is brought in is individually wrapped and that the ingredients are either printed on the packaging or clearly indicated for any of our allergy concerns (gluten, dairy, nuts, etc.) Thank you!
