Tips

Here are some tips from previous students

*LUNCH*

  • Lunch money can be turned into the office before school or added to your account on the NMS website.

  • Everyday we have pizza, hamburgers, salad bar, chicken sandwhiches, milk and more!

    • You get one MAIN item and then can help yourself to sides like fruit, veggies, salads, tater tots and sometimes apple crisp!

  • Some days we can also purchase ice-cream, cookies, chips and other treats.

    • Don't buy too much though or your parents can shut this privilege down!

  • Lunch lines are really long at the beginning of the year...might want to bring a sack lunch for a couple of weeks!

  • Students bringing sack lunches can purchase milk, water or snacks.

  • Lunches and after school snacks should be stored in locker, but not eaten until lunch or outside at dismissal.

*LOCKERS* [CURRENTLY LOCKERS ARE NOT BEING ASSIGNED DUE TO COVID 19]

  • EVERY LOCKER is a little different. Mine opened easily, but my friend had to really pull up hard...kicking or punching it does NOT help!

  • Locker areas are super crowded and passing period goes very fast! Don't go to your locker after each class.

    • DO THIS INSTEAD: Go to your locker right away and grab your things (pencil case, book(s), folders/notebooks & computer/charger) for your first 2-3 classes. Then switch out for the next 2-3 and so on. That way you only have to visit your locker a few times during the day.

  • Keep your locker combination private...unless you need to ask a teacher to help.

  • Never put loose papers in your locker or backpack...they become lost papers!

  • At the beginning or end of each day, throw away trash and organize!

  • Hang your locker shelf UPSIDE DOWN on your locker's side hooks...it will give you better space!

  • TAKE HOME or recycle papers/projects that teachers have graded and handed back...you don't have room to keep everything at school!

*FRIENDSHIP*

  • Sometimes the students you are in elementary with stay your best middle school friends, sometimes you grow a little a part when you find other friends. That's okay.

  • Friends should bring out the best in you!

  • Stay away from drama! It's fun at first, but then just brings EVERYONE down!

  • Join clubs to meet people that have the same interests!

  • Be kind and respectful to all types of people. Some will be close friends, others will be classmates that you might have to do group projects with!

  • There are more "types" of kids and teachers in middle school. Find your tribe and let your freak flag fly high!

*HOMEWORK/PRIDE Time*

  • Most days you will have about 30-45 minutes of homework assigned.

  • Get as much done in Guided Study or Mustang Scholar Retreat as you can.

  • If you get stuck on a problem email the teacher and then come in before school at 7:15 for help.

  • Do the hardest or most boring work first at school and then save the easy or fun stuff for when you get home.

  • Don't wait until the last minute to start projects!!!

  • Pride Time is not a bad, it is a time to get help. Teachers are nice and will help you get your work finished before you leave.
