Written Communication in Mathematics

The purpose of my study was to determine if the use of written and oral responses will increase student achievement in number sense and mathematical reasoning.

Demographics

This project was conducted in the 2020-2021 school year. I taught 3rd grade in Omaha, NE in a Title-1 school. In the 2018-2019 school year there were 413 students enrolled at our building. 100% of students receive free and reduced lunch in my building due to COVID-19. This study was composed of seven in-person learners. One student had an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) for a Specific Learning Disability. There were two students on behavior plans in my classroom. The demographics of my study consisted of four students who are Caucasian, two students who are Hispanic, and one student who is two or more races. The action research project was centered around seven students. These students were chosen because they were in the classroom for both whole-group and small-group instruction.
