Message from Dr. Penke
Picture Day: Picture Day is Tuesday, September 19th. Every student will get their picture taken regardless if they are purchasing a picture or not. There will be no paper forms sent home. For more information, see the picture section below.
Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Conferences are coming up! We will do all of our conferences in-person. We will be having conferences on Tuesday, October 10th from 4:00-8:00pm and Tuesday, October 11th from 4:00-8:00pm. Our conference preference letters will be coming home on Friday, September 22nd, so be looking for the form!
Arrival: We need your help! I am asking that you have your child ready to unload the car. If you are sitting there, getting your child dressed and ready in the car, you are holding up the whole line. If you need to get out of your car to help your child unload, then please go to a parking spot and unload from the parking spot. Then your child can use the crosswalk to get to the front door. We appreciate your help in building your child’s skills of independence.
School Improvement Team: We are looking for four volunteers/parents to be a part of our School Improvement Team this school year. The team meets 4 times a year on Thursdays from 4-5pm. If you are interested, please let Dr. Penke know at 402-715-2020 or hrpenke@mpsomaha.org. If we receive lots of interested parents, then we will do a lottery drawing for the four spots available. Our first meeting is Thursday, September 21st from 4-5pm.
Curriculum Night:
Thanks to everyone who attended Curriculum Night last week. We had 48% of our families in attendance. Thanks for partnering with us.
Have a great weekend!
Dr. Penke

Walking Club
Walking Club Reminders:
Students:
Walking club doors open at 7:55am and close at 8:05am. Students must wear their lanyard to enter the school for walking club. Students enter and place their backpack in the hallways near their grade level sign. Students will not go to the coat rooms or classrooms.
Behavior expectations for walking club: Students will actively participate in the walk, stay with the walking club group and keep their hands and feet to themselves. They will not attempt to go to the classroom early or go to the coat rooms before 8:15. Failure to obey these rules will result in removal from Walking Club. The club is operated on a three strike system. The third strike will result in removal for the remainder of the year.
Volunteers:
Volunteers can enter the building just prior to 7:55 and sign in at the front office. They will then go to their volunteer assignment if helping with the front door or hallway. Please do not attempt to enter the building prior to 7:50.
Volunteers helping with the walk will be directed by Mr. Mohning and may wait near the front of the line and help punch tags as the students line up.
At the conclusion of walking club, volunteers need to enter the building to turn in their volunteer badge and exit through the front door. Volunteers are not able to visit classrooms or walk their child to class. Please respect this boundary so we can keep the walking club in place.

MPS Children's Choice Book Award Nominee List
We are excited to announce the First Annual MPS Children's Choice Book Award Nominee List. Our teacher librarians and other Millard staff who know our students’ interests so well have selected 10 books that they think our students will love. We will be sharing these books with students, hosting a Millard Book Award competition, and using these books for our annual Quiz Bowl.
In addition, we are asking our students to help name this new award. Mrs. Svacina, our teacher librarian, will be sharing more information about this contest with our students. The new name will be unveiled in May along with the winner of the first annual Millard Public Schools Elementary Book Award.
