Message from Dr. Penke
Thanks for a great week of school! We look forward to seeing everyone at the PTO Carnival tonight!
Curriculum Night: We will have Curriculum Night on Tuesday, August 29th. We will have two time slots available to attend: 5:30-6:10pm and 6:15-6:55pm. Classroom teachers will give the same presentation twice so pick one time that works for your schedule. We look forward to sharing curriculum information with you. Curriculum Night is for parents and guardians only.
Lunch Visitors: Just a reminder that we are not allowing any lunch visitors or volunteers. After Labor Day, we welcome visitors to enjoy lunch with their child. When you come to eat lunch with your child, we request that you leave at the end of lunch and before your child goes back to class or recess. All parents/visitors must eat at the designated table in the hallway by the office with their child only or in the gym with their child’s class. Please sign in at the office when you first arrive.
Dismissal: If you didn’t receive a yellow piece of cardstock with your last name and student’s grade level during the first week of school, please email Ms. Allen at laallen@mpsomaha.org We ask everyone who picks up at the end of the day to put the yellow card on the dash so we can read the card and know who belongs in the car. If you need more than one sign, please let us know and we are happy to provide it.
Bikes: If your child rides a bike to school, please make sure the bike is locked up. Bikes should be walked while on school property so that no one gets hurt or run over.
Walking Club: The last day to sign up for Walking Club is August 25th.
Nuisance Items: Please keep all personal items at home such as toys, stuffed animals, watches, etc. If the item distracts from learning then it is considered a nuisance item and will be taken away. Smart watches are a big distraction as students don’t always know the boundaries and expectations of using the watch.
Absences: Please email the teacher and Ms. Allen at laallen@mpsomaha.org if your child is going to miss school or call the school at (402)715-2020. We would appreciate any details you can share about your child’s illness.
Have a great weekend!

Transdisciplinary Themes
The PYP is a transdisciplinary program organized around six themes of global significance. Teachers are guided by these six transdisciplinary themes (Kindergarten complete four) as they design units of inquiry.
**Did you know that each grade level completes a unit of inquiry under each of these six themes during the school year?
Who We Are– An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Where We Are in Place & Time– An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
How We Express Ourselves– An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
How the World Works– An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
How We Organize Ourselves– An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function or organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.
Sharing the Planet– An inquiry into the rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

Students will line up with a partner and follow Mr. Mohning for a morning walk.
Students will receive a punch on their punch card each day they walk. They will earn prizes by turning their punch card in to Mr. Mohning each time the reach 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 miles.
Walking Club will conclude at 8:15. Students will enter the school through the recess door and pick up their backpack.
Behavior expectations for walking club: Students will actively participate in the walk, stay with the walking club group and keep their hands and feet to themselves. They will not attempt to go to the classroom early or go to the coat rooms before 8:15. Failure to obey these rules will result in removal from Walking Club. The club is operated on a three strike system. The third strike will result in removal for the remainder of the year.
Volunteers:
Volunteers can enter the building just prior to 7:55 and sign in at the front office. They will then go to their volunteer assignment if helping with the front door or hallway. Please do not attempt to enter the building prior to 7:50.
Volunteers helping with the walk will be directed by Mr. Mohning and may wait near the front of the line and help punch tags as the students line up.
At the conclusion of walking club, volunteers need to enter the building to turn in their volunteer badge and exit through the front door. Volunteers are not able to visit classrooms or walk their child to class. Please respect this boundary so we can keep the walking club in place.
