Trimester Project Overview
In seventh grade, students work together to form their own news company. In teams, they design their newscast, select topics to report on, write news pieces, conduct interviews, and film their segments. Along the way, they explore writing for broadcast news, anchoring, and filming. The project culminates with a dispersal of their final newscasts.
News Team Organization
To get started, each student pitched ideas and voted on a news company name and tagline. They landed on KMPMSN (K-Marin Primary & Middle School News) "News you didn't know you needed to know". Then, they worked with their news teams to determine what segments their team's newscast would cover.
Writing for Broadcast News
In pairs, student news team members wrote segments on stories of interest or prepared and conducted interviews with faculty members. Along the way they practiced writing lead sentences, sharing information succinctly, establishing interview goals, and formulating open ended questions.
Production
Each news team pair took a turn anchoring their segment or leading an interview. News team members also pitched in to setup the studio (lighting, teleprompter, green screen, mics, etc.) and film each segment. During production they put their performance skills to task as anchors and contributors.
