6th GRADE DRAMA
Exploring Stories Through Comedy & Improv
Exploring Stories Through Comedy & Improv
Semester Project Overview
In 6th grade, students explore comedy performance. Over the course of the project they explore the fundamentals of improv, joke structure, and emcee scriptwriting. To try out and show off their skills, they plan and produce a Comedy Showcase for the MP&MS community.
Comedy Showcase Rehearsal
During rehearsals, students participated in a wide variety of games to practice improv fundamentals: "yes, and", listening, and getting out of your head. To build awareness of their growing skills, students completed a series of short written reflections based on specific benchmarks like "adding to an imagined scene's storyline" or "using descriptive language to help set the scene for an audience".

Student Reflection Snapshots
I learned how to improvise and I also learned how to be more carefree. I realized that if you don’t care what people think the show can be funnier and if you make a mistake it could be a happy mistake.
My advice for future 6th graders is to step into your role, take in the audience and the fact that you're doing a play -- it could be something you end up enjoying a lot!
Don’t be afraid to laugh at your own mistakes because the audience will laugh with you.
When you’re up on stage you can show who you really are and act the way you want to be. I’m going to remember the joy of being myself.
To quote Bob Ross, “We don’t make mistakes, just happy accidents”. Even if you’re in a play and you forget your lines it’s fine, it’s not a mistake it’s just an accident.
