6th GRADE DRAMA
Exploring Stories Through Comedy & Improv
Exploring Stories Through Comedy & Improv
Trimester Project Overview
In 6th grade, students explore comedy performance. Over the course of the project they explore the fundamentals of improv, joke structure, and emcee scriptwriting. To try out and show off their skills, they plan and produce a Comedy Showcase for the MP&MS community.
Comedy Showcase Rehearsal
During rehearsals, students participated in a wide variety of games to practice improv fundamentals: "yes, and", listening, and getting out of your head. To build awareness of their growing skills, students completed a series of short written reflections based on specific benchmarks like "adding to an imagined scene's storyline" or "using descriptive language to help set the scene for an audience".

Student Reflection Snapshots
I am most proud of being able to say things on the spot!
Learning and practicing improv helps me get better at talking to people outside of class.
I enjoyed the games and making the posters I thought they were fun because it helped me understand acting and I got to work with my friends.
To future 6th graders I would say that drama is very fun and that you should look forward to playing all the games ahead.
I would tell future 6th graders that this year of drama class is incredible fun and that they shouldn't be worried at all.
Drama skills help me think fast and with being in front of crowd.
I have enjoyed being with my friends, playing games like Stoicism, My Movie, and You're Fired. I also have enjoyed practicing and writing my script for the Comedy Showcase.
I would tell future 6th graders do not be scared to do improv because people won't judge you. Just be yourself and you'll be funny.
What surprised me most in Drama this trimester was how many new games we learned. For example, we played a game called, advice column. In this game we would give advice to someone. This game was so much fun and I would definitely do it again and again.
