Welcome to AVID!

My name is Mr. Smith and this is my second year teaching AVID at Franklin. I am excited to both continue to work with students from last year and new students during the 2019-2020 school year.

I grew up in Minneapolis and attended Minneapolis Public Schools. After graduating from South High School in 2014 I went on to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where I graduated in 2018. I recieved a Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in Secondary Education.

In my free time I enjoy coaching baseball at South High School and also playing during weekends in the summer. Some additional interests that I have are kayaking different lakes in Minneapolis, traveling, and watching sports.

AVID stand for Advancement Via Individual Determination and this course is designed to equip students with skills to become successful students, but also to prepare them for college. Students in AVID will focus on developing skills in 5 different areas which include Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading.

My belief in education is to prepare your children for both college and the real world. I emerse students in current events and relate content in my classroom to real-world application. Students can expect to write, discuss, and really dig into a variety of topics. In addition to this, guest speakers come to the class to discuss with students about different careers and students in AVID also have the opportunity to participate in different college trips over the course of the year.
