Samuel is a student at MPC aspiring to be a credentialed teacher. He is looking to transfer from MPC to CSUMB where he can achieve his goal right here in the community. In the meantime he is working at the Pattullo Swim Center in Seaside, CA. He has been there for 4-years providing a valuable service to the community of teaching children to swim. Samuel is a member of the MPC Career Academy, a program that prepares students to build their resume, cover letter, and interviewing skills to ready MPC students for career and transfer. He used the work experience program to expand his role in his current job while earning college units at MPC.
A note from his supervisor: Here at Pattullo Samuel serves as an essential part of our team and community. As a lead lifeguard, youth programs instructor, and water exercise instructor he works to educate and the public about safety in, on, and around the water. Teaching swim lessons is one of the most directly impactful aspects of our work, and his demeanor as an instructor engages students in a way that is essential to our mission. His three years of experience is highly valued by new staff in need of strong leadership which allows us to serve the community effectively. We are grateful to have Samuel and his hardworking, positive attitude here.
The inaugural MPC Employer & Student Mixer was a huge success. Thank you to all of our employer partners who came to our Cinco de Mayo celebration to mingle with MPC students. Students and employers were matched by student interest and employer need. We are grateful to the Ready to Work Team and Student Services through the EPC grant for the financial support to host this event.

Big changes are coming in Fall 2023 to the Cooperative Work Experience program at Monterey Peninsula College. The program is moving from a model of carrying 24 courses to a simplified offering of 2 courses. The California Community College Chancellor's Office is in the process of finalizing changes to the program. The 2 courses being offered are an exploratory course for students who are trying out internships to guide their academic path and a career-focused course for students who know what they want to do academically and want to gain experience in their chosen career field. We are looking forward to the new and exciting changes coming to the program.
Many programs at MPC have work experience courses built into them with your success in mind.
MPC instructors who value these experiences and see the merit in including them in your studies have gone out of their way to partner with our Work Experience Department and build the course into their program curriculum with your success in mind. Some of these programs include: Auto Tech, Hospitality, Humanities, Nutrition, Business and more. If your program doesn't have it built in you can still participate and the units qualify for MPC general education credit and are transferable to CSUs. The possibilities are endless. Here are some of the places where our students are earning college units while gaining valuable work experience this semester.
Congressman Jimmy Panetta's office, CHOMP, Pebble Beach Company, United Way, Chevy Salinas, Mercedes Benz, Granite Rock, Skip's Auto, MPI-Jet, Pacific Grove High, MEE Memorial, Carver Studio, Victory Toyota, Silva Farms, County of Monterey, UC Santa Cruz, and many more.
Rancho Cielo students were brought to the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa to participate in mock interviews, try on and receive clothing that is sent out to be tailored to their size, have lunch, and this year, work on their resume and LinkedIn page with career professionals from MPC. Carla Becerra, MPC's Work-based Learning Coordinator and Lindsay Peelman, MPC's Business & Work Experience Faculty brought 6 MPC computers to the event and worked with students on their resumes and LinkedIn accounts. Molly Jansen, MPC's Hospitality department chair who serves on the MCHA Rancho Cielo Committee was there to assist students with picking out their outfits they will wear the the upcoming hospitality job fair. MPC is a proud partner to all of the local high schools in the area and believes in the work "community" when it comes to community college. We wish all of the Rancho Cielo students who attended this event luck in their upcoming job search at the Monterey County Hospitality Association Job Fair.
Ricardo is a MPC student that is interning at MPI-JET at the Monterey Jet Center. Ricardo has been working on marketing and sales projects that involve booking and selling private jet flights. He feels that the experience has been extremely helpful to learn how to work in the luxury sales market. He was happy to enroll in the MPC Work Experience program and earn college units while gaining this valuable experience. His supervisor at MPI-JET raved about Ricardo's ethic and abilities.
MPC students and faculty volunteers prepared 60 tax returns for MPC students, employees, and local community members. This year we even attracted volunteer students from departments outside of business. This was alongside their studies, jobs, and personal lives. VITA as a whole in Monterey County facilitated 1,113 tax returns bringing a total of $1,228,479.00 back into the community. Our students managed our site with faculty oversight. Seeing their organizational skills grow and their communication skills shine was a highlight as a faculty member.
Jonathan is a Business Administration student at MPC. He was an advanced tax preparer and a site coordinator alongside one of the MPC Business Faculty Spring 2023 running the only VITA site open on the Monterey Peninsula. He worked hard to facilitate a team of tax preparers and complete tax returns alongside them while quality reviewing their returns. He said his favorite part of the experience was meeting community members, he found the tax payers to be kind. He felt that VITA helped him to improve his organizational and communication skills. He feels lucky to have expanded his knowledge of tax law at such a young age and feels it will benefit him for years to come. He was excited that he was able to earn college units while earning practical job experience. When asked what the most important this was that he learned he provided this quote: "Make sure you pay your taxes: otherwise you can get in a lot of trouble" - Richard Nixon. Jonathan provided this piece of advice for a student considering an internship: "If you're not sure whether internships are worth the time and effort, competitively speaking, having some internships under your belt gives you an edge over your competition. Additionally, you get to dip your toes into the company's atmosphere and see if you like it."
Jonathan is seen here working on the taxes of his fellow career academy cohort member, Chris.
MPC took 60 students to UC Davis and 45 students to San Jose State University this Spring to explore their transfer options, many of the students in attendance were our career academy students. Special thanks to Jihan Ejan and the EPC grant for organizing and funding these trips.

Our MPC business advisory committee partner Monterey Private Wealth came out to support our students and put on a financial literacy event for our MPC students.
At MPC we believe in collaboration, so much so we live by it. Why recreate work that others are doing? Partner up instead and cross-collaborate between departments. We have faculty who are always thinking out of the box and are humble in practice. Creating a culture of faculty engagement through collaboration is a win for students and your MPC instructors know that.
This spring the MPC Hospitality department tapped an instructor from the MPC Business and Work Experience program to teach students about career readiness and create a unique offering for students pursuing various pathways in hospitality. Food and beverage management, concierge, baking/pastry, restaurant ownership, artisan chef, human resource management, payroll, and more. It may seem like a challenge to instruct a class on so many separate pathways, at MPC we look at it as a strength. It is the diversity in our work that allows for a robust offering and collaboration of professional development.
Students were challenged to write cover letters, resumes, create interactive portfolios of their plated work/and/or resume depending on their career path. They each created a card with a QR code linking to their portfolio to hand to employers at a hospitality job fair that served as their final exam. Students were taught reflection as a practice, how to calm their nerves, strategies to navigate networking, provided headshots, LinkedIn support, and were given personal attention through career coaching. Many of them left this 8 week class with a new job, if they wanted one.
HOSP 66 ready to conquer the job fair.
This course then led the students right into their required work experience course to complete their hospitality certificates or degrees.
Collaboration doesn't have to be hard. For it to be easy it requires a bit of trust, communication, and motivated players. In the end, the students are the winners, and that is what we always strive for in education and at MPC.
Graduating with his hospitality degree this semester Samwaeil was able to use his current employer for his work experience site. Students use work experience for many reasons, Samwaiel used it to try out various positions within CHOMP, our hospital here on the peninsula. CHOMP not only feeds 300+ employees every day, they also feed 180+ patients a day. The menus are worked out ahead of time by the head chef in collaboration with a team of dietitians. The hospitality team is charged with providing these meals. Samwaeil indicated he has been inspired to continue his studies and is excited to see where it takes him. In the meantime, he loves working at CHOMP and his supervisor spoke highly of his work there.
"I am lucky to have found a job at a place where they take care of their employees and the people they serve. It’s like having one giant family, everyone treats each other with respect. There are many opportunities to improve and move up." - Samwaeil
