This is probably the most important page on my website!! For each of our units I will be posting information, important links, deadlines, and extra copies. Please make use of this resource throughout the year.

  • Unit 5: The US Dakota War and US Civil War
  • Civil War Quiz - Students will take a quiz on the Civil War on Tuesday, March 10th.
  • EdPuzzle Video Activity - Students worked, in Google Classroom, learning additional Civil War information and completing an activity in their Google Classroom.
  • Civil War Jigsaw Activity (in small groups) - Students worked with a small group learning about Minnesota stories and events during the Civil War through collaboratively completing this assignment.
  • Civil War Vocabulary and Note Sheet - Students worked on this assignment in class over a few days. It is collected and graded on the day of our Civil War quiz.
  • Dakota War Graded Class Discussion - Students were asked to participate in a graded class discussion based on their learning from the Dakota War. Students who didn't earn 10 points did not meet the required speaking threshold and must complete this alternate assignment.
  • Dakota 38 Movie - This film will be shown in class to all students. Please see my email if you have questions. Read more about the movie and view a trailer of the film here.
  • Dakota War Quiz - Students will be taking a quiz on the Dakota War on Wednesday 2/19. Take a look at the study materials provided below:
  • Dakota War Project - Students were able to choose between 4 different projects to complete as we learned about the Dakota War. The projects and their descriptions are linked below. Most of the work done for these projects was done in Google Classroom.
  • Dakota War Video Notes - Students looked at an overview of the Dakota War through daily short videos and completed this note sheet. Each video can be found on this website.
  • Dakota War Tensions - Students took notes on the groups of people involved in the Dakota War. A completed copy of these notes can be found here.
  • Broken Promises Activity - The relationship between the US Government and the Dakota people have been filled with many broken promises. Check out this activity we did in class to introduce our new unit.

Unit 4: Treaties and Immigration

  • Unit 4 Final Project - Taking the place of a test, students are responsible for completing this perspectives project looking at the way several Minnesotans view Minnesota and examining their own experience in Minnesota and completing a large paper. This project is DUE on 2/7.
  • Portrait of a Settler Project - In small groups, students worked, for a week, on learning about a Minnesota Settler and creating a visual "portrait" of their settler. In this project, students worked on a group work skills including perseverance, cooperation, and focus.
  • Population Comparison - In a small group, students compared the population of Minnesota in 1850 and 1860 and completed this reflection.
  • Chapter 7 and 20 Reading Guide - Students completed this, ungraded, reading guide as an introduction to our focus on immigration.
  • Immigration Journals - Every day, through the course of our unit, students listened to a different immigration story and filled out this journal.
  • Chapter 7&20 Crossword Puzzle - Students worked through the vocabulary from this unit by creating a crossword puzzle for their peers to complete in class.
  • Chapter 6 Reading Guide - Students completed this reading guide in class over two days as a way to learn about the chapter and prepare for the Chapter 6 quiz on Tuesday 1/14.
  • "Growth of a Nation Video" - Take a look at this animated atlas video of the way our nation grew following the Revolutionary War.
  • Chapter 6 Vocabulary Journals - During the first week of the unit, students will be completing these vocabulary journals using this powerpoint presentation.

Unit 3: Dakota, Ojibwe, and the Fur Trade

  • Unit 3 Test - Students are taking the Unit 3 Test on Thursday 12/19. Study materials and the re-take ticket can be found below:
  • Mapping the Fur Trade Pear Deck - In class, students learned about the way Minnesota's geography impacted the fur trade in this presentation.
  • Fur Trade Trading Scenario Packet - Over three class days, we worked on this packet and simulated several trade scenarios in class. The packet was graded.
  • Fur Trade Help Wanted Posters - Students were assigned a role of an important job during the fur trade. They created a "help wanted" poster using this worksheet as a guide. Then, they shared their role with others and filled out the back of the worksheet.
  • Chapter 5 Fur Trade Reading Guide - In class, students worked on this reading guide. We graded this worksheet in class. A low score is indicative of incomplete work or incorrect work.
  • Fur Trade Peardeck - In class, students were exposed to primary source photographs of fur trade objects using this presentation.
  • Dakota and Ojibwe 5 Paragraph Essay - Over a couple of weeks in class, students will be working on a Dakota and Ojibwe 5 Paragraph Compare and Contrast Essay. The final version of this essay is due (in Google Classroom) on 12/2. The essay is organized in a very systematic way and will be mostly completed in class.
  • Veteran's Day - Take a look at the I Fought For You video we watched in class. Want more? Take a look at this homecoming video.
  • Ojibwe Quiz Prep, Re-Take Ticket, and Extension - Students are able to prepare for the quiz by reading the questions on the slide below. In addition, when students need to re-learn you can access a re-take ticket below. Re-takes must be completed by Friday, 11/15. Students who don't need to re-take will work on an extension activity in class.
  • Ojibwe Seasonal Activities Poster - Students worked in partners, in class, to complete a poster demonstrating the activities of the Ojibwe during each season. A description of the assignment can be found here.
  • Chapter 4 (Ojibwe) Reading Guide - Students worked on this reading guide in class and used it to prepare for the Ojibwe Quiz.
  • Dakota Language Gotcha Ticket Activity - Students have the opportunity to earn Gotcha Tickets by memorizing a sentence in Dakota and sharing it with the class.
  • Dakota Quiz Re-Take Ticket and Extension - Students took the Dakota quiz in class, and had the opportunity to re-take the quiz in class. If students are still unhappy with their grade, they can access a re-take ticket below. Re-takes must be completed by Friday, November 8th. Students who didn't have to re-take the quiz, worked on optional extension activities in class.

  • Human Capital Activity - Students worked on this activity as a way to learn about the importance of human capital in Dakota culture.
  • Dakota Mapping Activity - Students worked on this ungraded assignment in class to prepare for the Dakota quiz.
  • Chapter 3 (Dakota) Reading Guide - Students worked on this reading guide in class and used it to prepare for our Dakota Quiz.

Unit 2: Minnesota Geography and Pre-History

  • Unit 2 Test - Study for the Unit 2 test by completing the following online practice games. A study guide was handed out in class. The Unit 2 Test is on Wednesday, 10/16. Re-takes are required by 10/31.
  • Chapter 2 Vocabulary Sheet - Students worked on this vocabulary sheet in class. The vocabulary sheet is DUE on 10/9 and expires on 10/16. Access a copy of the vocab sheet here.
  • Chapter 2 Reading Guide - Students worked on this reading guide as an introduction to Chapter 2. The reading guide was DUE on 10/7 and expires on 10/16. Access a copy of the reading guide here.
  • Rags to Riches Primary Source Game - Play this game to practice your source knowledge!
  • Primary and Secondary Source Notes - Students viewed this presentation and completed this note sheet on primary and secondary sources.

  • MN Mapping Assignments - Students worked on this MN Map in class on Friday 9/27. The completed map is DUE on 9/30.

Unit 1: Government and Citizenship

  • Government Notes - Students took notes on the 3 branches of government on two separate days:
  • 3 Branches of Government - After watching this video on the 3 branches of government, students began learning about government by completing this, ungraded, Google form.
  • Get to Know Your Leaders - Students spent time researching their own city, state, and national leaders. They used this slide presentation to complete this worksheet.
  • Citizenship Worksheet and Discussion - Students spent time exploring what citizenship looks like in different areas on this worksheet. After brainstorming, students participated in a graded whole-class discussion on citizenship. In order to earn full credit, students needed to speak 2x during the class discussion. Students who were absent for the discussion or who did not meet the speaking requirement did this makeup assignment.
