The MakerSpace is comprised of five separate spaces, each with a uniquely different identity. Four of the five rooms has no "front." The teachers are guides and move freely during the lessons and projects and encourage the students through the process of making.
The main room is referred to as the ThinkerSpace and constructed with round, white board walls, with counter height workstations. There is a SmartBoard and a teacher kiosk, but this room is build for collaboration!
Behind the ThinkerSpace is the WorkShop, where there are a myriad of tools such as glue guns, saws, Cricut Makers, wood burners, paper cutters, as well as supplies such as batteries, gears, pulleys, wires, rulers, scales, wheels, balsa wood, Teacher Geek Maker Carts, Little Bits, and Rokenbok activity carts. The WorkShop has two small butcher block tables, one being a paint station and the other for electronics. Two additional counter height workstations ease the transition from one room to the next. The WorkShop is outfitted with a tremendous amount of project storage and has four sliding whiteboards for student collaboration.
Secured behind closed doors in the FabLab are the heavy hitters - the drill press and scroll saw. The FabLab houses much of the needed storage space for paper, paint, recycled materials, glue and other teaching supplies.
Through the connecting door is the Digital Design Lab, which mimics a corporate conference room with dark mahogany tables and swivel stools. Eight 3D printers, Stop Motion Cameras, 12 high-powered laptops, 360 degree cameras fill the space with the newest technology.
Attached to the Digital Design Lab is the Media Lab equipped with an Oculus Rift Virtual Reality machine, a green screen wall for video production, and 2 cafe tables and bar stools for small group work.
The combination of these five rooms provide Mount Olive Middle School students with the flexible, open, space to follow their technological passions. As they learn 21 century skills such as collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking in this technology-rich environment, they are preparing for a world in which they can not only contribute, but excel.
